Maldonado's backing allegedly brings $30m a year. Williams have managed a single point... If that's all the improvement it gets you, I'd much rather have a decent driver.

Of course they do, but sacrificing talent for money doesn't always work. Look at McLaren ..... replacing Hamilton with Perez plus Carlos Slim's $$$$$ sure didn't =
better results.

That's the thing, I mean I get what you're saying but it's a matter of scale, 30 million is Ferrari's catering budged for the season... to a team lower down it does mean a good infusion, but so does finishing one spot ahead of your competition in the WCC. Look at Marrusia standing to make 40 for their 12th placed spot and Caterham making no money. In their case, a better driver can make the difference in dragging a car just one spot further up the grid.

The gulf between the haves and the have nots in the sport is HUGE, and to a mid field team 30 may help to keep the doors open but it won't help to catapult a team up the grid like what Hulkenberg is single handedly doing at Sauber.

How different? McLaren replaced talent with money, but the results have not improved. My original point was that replacing Kimi with Maldanado or Massa, and the money they bring, does not ensure success. The McLaren situation is an example of that, and for the record I rate Perez higher than either of those 2, despite his challenges this year.
