Mercedes non-executive chairman Niki Lauda has dismissed reports Ross Brawn will leave the team at the end of this season.

According to the BBC, Brawn has decided not to stay on as team principal in 2014 with negotiations having ‘reached an impasse’, and as such he has come to the conclusion he has ‘no option but to leave’.

Lauda, however, has insisted that talks are still on-going: “I hate all this bull****,” Lauda told British newspaper, The Daily Mail, when asked for a reaction to the BBC story.

“The speculation is total rubbish. The situation is absolutely clear: I spoke to Ross a while ago and we agreed that he will come back to me after the final race in Brazil to tell me whether he wants to stay or go.”

“I am trying everything I can to encourage and motivate him to stay. I want him to do it. But it is not my decision; it is his decision,” Lauda added. “If he stays he will be team principal – nothing else – or he will retire.

“With a new car and new engine, all the changes next year, I hope he will not leave.

“Anyway, why would he decide to go now, when we are busy fighting in the constructors’ championship for second or third place? We are not putting any pressure on him at all,” Lauda continued.

Brawn himself meanwhile also seemed to imply recently that no decision had yet been made.

“There is a transition going on [after the recruitment of Toto Wolff and Paddy Lowe]. We’re just determining what will be the best timing for that. I want the team to be in the best possible place for next year, so I think when the time is right we’ll let everyone know what we’re doing. But at the present time that’s all I want to say on the matter,” Brawn told reporters last Friday ahead of the Indian Grand Prix at the Buddh International Circuit.

There's still hope I guess. Lauda is the bridge between Daimler and the Merc management, and if he's pulling all stops to keep Brawn comfortable then there's nothing more to be done on Merc's side. It's up to Brawn...and for the team's sake I hope he stays. There's lots of success to be had next year, especially when Merc started off 2013 already with an eye on 2014.

Mercedes is bigger than Brawn - Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton would not be concerned if Ross Brawn leaves Mercedes, saying the team will be strong without him.

Rumours about Brawn's future have escalated in the past week, with Eddie Jordan claiming he will leave Mercedes at the end of the season but Niki Lauda saying he wants Brawn to stay on as team principal. However, Hamilton says it wasn't Brawn's presence that attracted him to Mercedes in the first place and that the team has plenty of strength in depth to deal with his potential departure.

"When I joined the team there were much bigger reasons why I joined the team and having him was a bonus," Hamilton said. "As I've got in to the team and learned who is in the team we've got some incredibly talented people within the team. He's a great boss, he's good fun to work with and he's got a great approach.

"Of course, as a boss he helps create a great atmosphere but that's what hopefully you would expect from all bosses. Whatever decision he makes moving forwards I hope that it's the right thing for him and I'm confident that either way we will have a strong team still."

Hamilton was also unconcerned about whether Brawn stays in Formula One or not should he leave the team.

"A loss to the sport? I mean, the sport will go on when you're not here, when I'm not here, when he's not here; it will just continue. So whether it's a loss to the sport I don't know. I don't see it that way."

I think what he's saying is that NO ONE is bigger than the sport itself. Brawn personally brought him to Mercedes and I think he wouldn't have gone there otherwise.

As least he has enough humility to not compare HIMSELF to the greats. :whip:

I resent this - it would be a huge loss to F1. I hope Ross is going to stick around in F1 in whatever function for a long time to come.

I'm sure he hopes that as well, it sounds like a rationalization of a potential tough loss.

No, LH missed the point, by a country mile. Unless the quoting isn't accurate, he put his foot in his mouth, again.

No, I think it's you not Lewis that's missed the point. I hope against hope that Ross stays at Mercedes and I'm pretty sure Lewis does too. But he might not, and life goes on.

To say it wouldn't be a loss for F1 is just plain stupid.
