if they said harder/softer instead of option/prime, people would probably get even more confused when they say "pirelli brought the super soft and medium tires this weekend." "...but I thought they said hard and soft?!"

I just think of option as a choice, aka the choice tire to be on, i.e. the fastest, i.e. the softer of the two :D

I think the genesis of "prime" is that it is the tire that will be used to cover of the laps of the race - primary used tire. "Option" to me refers to the optional laps a team chooses to run on the alternative rubber.

It doesn't make sense to me to think that the softer tire will always be faster. Sometimes the harder tire will be faster, it depends on the circuit, temp and other variables.

But they put such pretty colours on the tyres to help - just watch them go round and round, and don't worry about the rest.

But prime sounds like it should be the best to be on...like a prime cut of beef. Option sounds like, well, you have to have a go on the other option, even though it's not so good.

If they said soft and hard ( or softer/ harder) it would be ok because even if they brought mediums and super softs the terms hard and soft would be relative to the other tyre brought.

Primes are pretty much always the best to race on :)

But they're not the fast ones are they? Argggh it's too hard! I'm mixed up with them again!

Personally I'd completely revamp tire use in F1.

Firstly I'd end the limit of tires for practice and Q.
Secondly I'd drastically shorten the pit entry and exits to the shortest reasonable distance and get the pit lane speed up as high as possible during the race.
Third I'd give each team their years racing supply so they had plenty of tires but not enough of any one compound that they could race mostly on those.

Teams could strategize as to how best to use their years supply of tires. Drivers could chose the tire set that suits them most and could truly race at, or close to their max potential the whole race.

As with so many things in F1, it's not quite that simple. Sometimes the hard ones are the fastest ones over a single lap. I like this method of thinking about tire compounds. Imagine tires made of toffee (the soft stuff that you pull) and tires made of hard licorice. The sticky toffee tires would slow you down dramatically on the long straights of Monza but would be great at Monaco.

The real problem isn't the name, the real problem is fact that the tires are rubbish - not what we call them :hehe:

Yes they are rubbish. Tyres on the best racing cars in the world that you can't go fast on them. Whoever thought of that idea?? I agree with your idea Spanky. I think the teams should decide what tyres to take to the race, so long as they use the two compounds......and the compounds are fit for purpose,

Why do they "have" to use two compounds?? Is there a "valid" reason??

p.s. saying it's only to keep things fair, is NOT a valid reason!! :nono:

For the same reasons cars can't be below a certain weight, or the same reason you've got to have a liter of sample fuel after qualifying; Because them's the rules for quite some time now.

It was to spice up tbe strategies in the race. However teams soon found the optimal stratergy and most follow it

Oh, I know that... I'm just wondering what the rationale is behind "needing" to use two different types of tires!

Ok... so, what's the point "now" that everyone has figured it out?
