Not really long at all to be honest. His accident was the last race of 1995 and he finished 5th in the first race of 1996. In fact in the first 10 races of the season, he had six top 5's, one of which was a podium. The problem was that the McLaren of 1996 wasn't great, not that Hakkinen wasn't still fast... The podiums only came later that season, not because Hakkinen was recovering still, but because McLaren adjusted their chasis and the car was better. Hakkinen never lost his speed, which is somewhat of a miracle given the severity of his accident in Australia.

I've said it before on other Kubica/accident related thread here. He's lucky to be alive. I think we all collectively knew given the images from the accident and given that he suffered what amount to an amputation, that he is racing, in any capacity is a miracle of medicine.

I never expected him to drive in F1 again, and I'm just glad he's in a situation to be doing what he loves. I'd love to see him perhaps hired by Porsche for their remaining LMP1 seats.

I'll be honest, I can't see Kubica coming back to F1 and it's a shame, he'd be a great driver for Ferrari in my opinion, maybe a contender for the World Championship...Probably, but I guess that is the chastisement of what happens of that accident

As is Massa! And, although Kubica's injuries are physical/visible, I still believe that Massa's as just as serious albeit psychological!
And, no, I'm not a doctor/specialist! I am basing that opinion on the differences I see him "post-accident"!

Kubica's accident in Montreal 2007 was pretty intense as well. The guy must have 9 lives.
