The footage above is associated with the death of Tom Pryce and steward Jansen van Vuuren in the South African Grand prix in 1977. Although the victims are not clearly shown in the film, you can read that Pryce was decapitated in his car which also chopped van Vurren in half as he ran across the track. OK, they were still at racing speeds but as you can see, this was no blind corner like the one where Webber hitched a lift with Alonso. Rosberg's car could easily have side-swiped Webber or crashed into Alonso's parked car.

I just stumbled across this comment on Sky F1 page, I thought it needed sharing.

"A driver could easily have been hurt." Drivers driving 200 kph can also easily get hurt. Why not put the national speed limit in F1 as well. That will make it more "relevant" Kimi was already hurt, had a bad back. He could have had a lapse of consciousness at 150mph. Give him a reprimand as well. Seb winning for Red Bull hurts millions of Tiffosi, why not give him a reprimand.

I just stumbled across this comment on Sky F1 page, I thought it needed sharing.

"A driver could easily have been hurt." Drivers driving 200 kph can also easily get hurt. Why not put the national speed limit in F1 as well. That will make it more "relevant" Kimi was already hurt, had a bad back. He could have had a lapse of consciousness at 150mph. Give him a reprimand as well. There is accepted risk that comes along with being an F1 racer, but it's never smart to justify unnecessary risk. That was dangerous because of the blind corner. In a long straight it may have been much less dangerous, but both of the Mercs had to make sudden corrections and it's clearly visible on the clip.

I haven't been watching F1 as long as most of you here and that's pretty obvious; but,
tell me this, has NO driver EVER taken an UNnecessary risk DURING a race? In my own
limited time, I've seen some moves where drivers literally "thread" their cars into spots
that don't seem wider than a minute, yet, they're applauded for it when they succeed!!

I'm NOT condoning what either Alonso or Webber did, as both of them took a risk most
of us wouldn't dream of taking... or, haven't we?

Having read the preponderance of criticism directed at Alonso and Webber for Singapore hitchhike, I went back and watched the vids again.

I just can't believe people think that any driver (let alone an F1 racer) could in anyway be challenged by having to move a few degrees while traveling at 70Kph - I just don't see it. I'm just gonna gauge these comments against the next so called racing incident at full racing speed. For Spanky's sake, this is just correctness gone berserk

But on the warm down lap, the drivers will be concentrating no-where near as much as they do when racing at full speed. Half the time on the in-lap they are looking at, and waving at, the crowd.

If Webber was now dead, would you still feel it was ok?

I have mixed views in this. I dislike spontaneity being removed, but unjustified risk has to removed. Sagi, the risks you refer to are during the race, split second decisions at high speed, yes they can be risky moves, this is a risky sport and the risk goes with it. But after the race there's no more need for risks . It puts me in mind of the marshal who was killed when he bent to pick up his wallet by a slow moving truck. Also of the loony priest at Silverstone. I know those incidents are different , but any such incidents should surly be minimised?
It's a difficult call. This incident may have been trivial, and Webber overly punished( has he got a ten place grid drop.? That's harsh)
But if they did nothing then it's condoning the breaking of a safety rule and next time the transgression may result in an injury..or worse. They know the rules.

I'll just pick up on one point RC, and I know its because you are away that you probably dont know. Webber and Alonso only got a reprimand each, which in my opinion isnt overly harsh.

Separately, this was Webber's 3 reprimand this season, and when that happens you get handed the 10-place penalty.
