Wild rumours are doing the rounds that Michael Schumacher could be set to make a racing return - on the saddle of a MotoGP bike.

The French sports newspaper L'Equipe seemingly began the speculation by publishing an article raising the possibility of the 39-year-old German, who retired as a seven time world champion in 2006, making a wild-card entry for the Mugello event this year.

Schumacher has twice tested for the Italian motorcycle marque Ducati, impressing with his pace. It is also reported that the former Ferrari racer may have tested again at France's Circuit de Bresse.

L'Equipe also claimed that someone from Schumacher's entourage recently visited the headquarters of MotoGP's governing body to arrange the documentation for a one-off race entry.

In the Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport on Monday, however, MotoGP boss Carmelo Ezpeleta, and Ducati chief Livio Suppo, dismissed the stories.

This would be cool if Schumi did do the one off race the Italians would go nuts!

That would be great to see, Schumacher coming out of retirement to do one offs, especially as he is still at his best even though he's only "having fun" like he did at the Race of Champions. :)

Tex is right its a big risk to race in motogp, he would want to be on the pace or atleast within about 2 seconds to race safely with the guys.

not bad riding there by mike, still needs to get his knees down earlier into the corners and get more of a lean, then he will improve the pace even more!

It would be surreal to see M. Schumacher on the timesheets next to Toseland, Rossi, Stoner, Checa etc, but it would be fun nevertheless and would no doubt get many people interested in MotoGP.

I think if for example he was on the Ducati, and assuming it's still a fast bike, Schumi could have a shout at a point or two. He seems to be a natural on whatever machinery he sits in/on.

With so many drivers/riders trying out in other racing series, does anyone believe that if you're successful in one area, you'll be successful in another?

Yes that has been proven such as with John Surtees, Dan Gurney, Mario Andretti etc etc but that was 'yesterday' when there were not so many factor's involved. MS imho will NEVER race a machine in 'anger' ever again. I pray that his love for speed, concerning racing a MotoGP bike, does not lead to a situation that I cannot even type because I do not want to jinx his aura.

Former Ferrari CEO Jean Todt has said that he was not pleased to hear of Schumacher’s two-wheeled racing debut last week.

The German driver took to two wheels last week in a semi-professional race in Hungary, finishing in third place behind two professional riders. Many were impressed with his form – Schumacher qualified on pole position but chose to start the race from the rear of the field.

Talking to Swiss magazine Motorsport Aktuell Todt said, “It is Michael’s life so he makes his own decisions. But do I agree with them? Absolutely not - everybody knows how dangerous motorbike racing can be.

“But I am not stupid – it it was not in Michael’s nature to take risks, he would not have had the kind of career that he has had. Some things I like, some I do not. This one, I don’t.”
