Seems there was a lot going on throughout the race that FOM blocked from broadcast
And Greenpeace did not set out to disrupt the race, as they could easily have done
Its sad how so many look but never see things. There are still those who 'hate' greenpeace for 'doing something' at the last race, and havent stopped to think what it was they were doing. They didnt come to stop the race, or to complain about F1, or to say F1 is a particular problem environmentally. Nope they came to publicise what Shell, an F1 sponsor is doing almost covertly in the Arctic.

It was one of the most carefully planned and elaborately staged protests in the history of sport. Greenpeace had protestors paraglide into the Belgian Grand Prix with banners highlighting the oil company's drilling within the Arctic circle. In addition they had protestors on the roof of the main grandstand opposite the pits who remained in place with their banner for the race; there were protestors above some of the trackside signage and two protestors who were stopped from abseiling down into the podium ceremony. In addition we had an ingenious radio-controlled banner that was unfurled in front of the podium during the ceremony, much to the embarrassment of Allsport, who run that part of the event.

put that into context. Exxon Mobil dwarfs Shell Oil.

and then you see them do this, because 45 billion dollars a year in pure PROFIT isn't enough.

MAYFLOWER (KATV) - In one month, ExxonMobil will stop paying temporary housing accommodations for residents evacuated due to the Mayflower oil spill but have been cleared to return home.

The deadline only applies to the 11 property owners in the Northwoods subdivision whose homes have been cleared as safe for re-entry. Representatives said exceptions could be made for residents who have a lease that hasn't expired yet.In all, 22 people were evacuated when the Pegasus Pipeline burst in May.

Almost covert I said, i.e unknown to the vast majority of people, some who are easy led by Shell propaganda, and some too dumb to understand its significance

Read a few offshore engineering journals and you'll find out plenty.

Yes, but do you?

I wasn't telling Cookingflat6 to what to read, it was a general comment on where to find information on artic oil exploration. Do try and keep up.

Is that where you found out about the 'safe' way Shell drills in the Arctic?

But he made a statement that the facts of the discussion are unknown to the vast majority of people. And you come back with suggesting that all the facts are there in offshore engineering journals.......

If you can't see from that how stupid you sound, I'll leave you be, and let you embarrass yourself (yet again).

For those willing to go beyond the knee jerk 'how dare Greenpeace protest at F1 etc', and for those who may have become curious about the issue they were protesting, the implication and risks associated with Shells drilling in the Arctic

Just a peek at the other side of the discussion would not harm anyone

http://www.greenpeace.org/international/en/campaigns/climate-change/arctic-impacts/The-dangers-of-Arctic-oil/

Snippets for those unwilling to click on the link for fear of being 'contaminated' by the treehugging unfashionable PC brigade

The Arctic's extreme weather and freezing temperatures, its remote location and the presence of moving sea ice severely increase the risks of oil drilling, complicate logistics and present unparalleled difficulties for any clean-up operation. Its fragile ecosystem is particularly vulnerable to an oil spill and the consequences of an accident would have a profound effect

The closest example we have seen of the effects of an oil spill in these Northern extremes is the Exxon Valdez tanker spill in Alaska. Two decades later, the region is still suffering the after-effects

The oil industry has demonstrated time and time again that it is simply not prepared to deal with the risks and consequences of drilling in the Arctic. One senior official from a Canadian firm that specializes in oil-spill response openly stated that: “There is really no solution or method today that we're aware of that can actually recover [spilled] oil from the Arctic.”

Doesn't F1 car use less fuel in a season than concorde does to fly accross the atlantic?

The amount of fuel used in a SEASON in F1 is used less than a concorde's distance over the atlantic, yeah very very impressive fact. Shows how efficient these amazing engines are. :)

Though the protest wasn't against F1, it was about Shell and their quest for more profits.

Or how inefficient the Concorde is? Image

I think the protest was less about who uses the most fossil fuel derived energy and more about the carnage that could be unleashed on the worlds eco system if Shell cause a spill in the artctic
