If you look at the new Merc roadcars, they are following the BMW/Audi pathway where there is younger generation appeal.

The old look of Merc, we are only for businessmen and rich chauffeur driven corporates is dying off quickly. Merc has lost a lot of market share to BMW/Audi precisely because of that image and it's an image they're trying to shed quickly.

On my timeline after qualifying, they actually posted a meme image saying something like "Not sure if Merc are fast, or just fu*king with us"...and there were no stars/censors! I was surprised.

Also wannabe gangsters are not exactly going to want to wear cheap stuff or drive mediocre cars are they, that's the whole idea of bling etc

I think you may be surprised. Mercedes are quite laid back if you read some if their tweets. And badass gangsta would be better than the current boring bland expensive stuff. I quite fancy myself as a badass gangsta chick...maybe I'll change my name

Might appeal to Lewis and his homeboy inspired themes he has going on but not sure that will appeal to your average Merc owner .

Personally i think the whole hip hop culture lacks any real substance or style. Mercedes-Benz is way above that crap!

Mercedes don't want to come over as stuffed suits. I like the more relaxed styles. Hoodies , T shirts, caps are on sale on all the race team stands. Merc just needs to get ahead of the game and inject a bit of new blood into the same old, same old. It wouldn't be too difficult to come up something brilliant. And I think that's what Lewis wants to have a go at.

The don't need to appeal to the average Merc owner, they have them hooked already on the quality of the car. This stuff is for F1 enthusiasts and future markets.

There are plenty of ways to appeal to a younger market without needing to go down the hip hop inspired 'gun toting hip gangsta wannabes'

Started of as Merc wont accept Lewis 'style' fashion, the flaw was pointed out in that argument

so it became Mercs customers wont like Lewis 'style' fashion - again the flaws are pointed out

Well you know what, Lewis never said he'd design hip hop clothes, just said he'd like some input into the design, it was you who brought up the gangster stuff. As to concentrating on his driving, Brawn is happy he's doing so, Toto is happy he's doing so and Lauda is happy he's doing so. I guess he won't lose too much sleep if you're not happy about his focus.

Personally, I like Di Resta!!

As for how he speaks when he's interviewed, I'd like to point out that there is a certain driver,
who happens to be a favourite of oh, so many, who described how he won in the first person
( I, me, my), yet, when he lost, he spoke of his battle as a group effort (we, us, our)!!

A link to an example of that would be interesting to see, because I actually thought that Lewis was always critiscised for being too 'McLaren PR robot' when talking about himself and the team.
There is also the liegate, when he did what the team wanted damaging his reputation.

No I must say the impression of Lewis at Mclaren was not one of not being a team player or taking credit for strategy calls or even saying I this or that, it was always 'we, they have done a great job'
He even saw all the engineers in the team poring over his data in a bid to help Jenson work out how to drive without complaining.

As in all things in Life, there are no absolutes. I didn't intend that Hamilton "always" spoke in the first person,
nor that he "never" gave his team credit/followed orders. Having said that, the number of times I heard him
do that have left a lasting impression; however, I have noticed that he is a different, more mature, young man
this season. Anyway... here are a couple of youtube videos that I found that show what I mean. To be honest,
I didn't search for hours and hours, as work is a terrible taskmaster, at the moment:

In this one, Hamilton is obviously proud of his accomplishment and deservedly so; but, it's a bit silly to go on
and on and on about how great his lap was. And, yes, he does "finally" mention his team; but, by that time,
I had tuned him out. That's just how it is with me when I heard him, the first time:

Here, Hamilton is very clear that he did his best; but, his team let him down. Sure, that may very well be the
case; but, making those kinds of comments is not necessarily proving how he's a team player:

Again, I have been pleasantly surprized by his attitude this year, as he seems to have matured and is in control
of his emotions... well, where they aren't focused on his love life!!

For the record, I did not appreciate his "Ali G" comment, as it was unfortunately timed!
He was obviously frustrated, when he made the comment; however, considering that
not everyone knows of the character Hamilton was mimicking, there really should not
be any kind of surprize at how it was perceived.

I realize that was then and that Hamilton would probably think twice about making that

Well the first clip proves my point, so thanks for posting that. Despite being ecstatic about his drive, He said he couldn't have done it without the team, he thanked the team and he referred to the team as 'we'.

In the second clip he was clearly livid at being taken out and being given a duff strategy ( of which he was given many). He was railing against the strategy call not the team per se.


Don't know why you've brought up the Ali G incident, nothing to do with not being a team player, but since you have , I'll comment. In fact I mentioned it just the other day on another thread. I'm sure he regrets saying it after the ridiculous fallout from it. It was a throw away joke comment, in response to his constant harassment by the stewards ( if you think Perez is getting it bad look back to some of the decisions Hamilton had against him).
Over political correctness went bananas when he said that. If Kimi had said it everyone would have fallen about it stitches.

We seem to like politically correct stuffed shirts these days( unless your name is Kimi)
Lewis has changed his media approach from a fresh faced, honest young man, to a man who guarded his words, stumbled over sentences ( later 'McLaren days) . To now, a guy who is learning to play the game. It's a shame. He is emotional, so he can't always hide the real Lewis.

Seriously....a guy expresses his surprise and natural delight at a lap he put on, and is asked 'how he did it', what do you want him to say "My team drove the car, ask them"? He was fresh out of the car, and he basically said what he thought of the lap which was what he asked. Obviously he was pleased with his effort since they did not expect pole that day by a long shot (I remember that lap clearly and it was super), so when you get a surprise pole, you're going to be happy.

The Ali G thing..right, not a team player because he was complaining about always being penalized by the stewards. Maybe he should've said "My team should've been penalized along with me, I don't know why it's just me" will that sound better? lol
