The only reason massa got so close to the championship is because Kimi could not be bothered...

No one really knows what was going on, so I can't be sure it's a matter of him not being bothered!

I always thought Kimi lost interest when Lewis burst on the scene, figuring he was near unbeatable without the FIA assistance Ferrari had in 2007

As bad as Massa is being made out to be, he did wipe the floor with Kimi in 2008 and was on his way to doing the same in 2009. I don't know how much I'd expect from an Alonso/Kimi pairing.

It is quite possible that the car simply did not suit Kimi. At the time, there was much discussion about the front end of the Ferrari not working to his liking. That could explain why Massa outscored him. Remember, before his accident Massa was capable of some good results. At certain tracks (Bahrain, Brazil, Turkey and Hungary come to mind) he was very fast, if conditions allowed him to get the tires up to temperature. When it comes to being in the car and racing, I sincerely doubt Kimi has ever not bothered to try.

I have to agree!! He's too competitive even if he's not overtly emotional in public!!

I think he won the title and lost interest

Yeah..this is the simplest explanation, and goes well with his general attitude.

Then he went to Rally, found out he sucked at it and wanted to come back to something he's actually very good at.

It's the easiest explanation if you don't want to believe Massa could have beaten a WDC for two years running. In any case the "I lost interest" explanation is a tough pill to swallow when you're asking for multi million multi year contracts.

McLaren cheated and were rightly disqualified from the WCC. To be honest, they were lucky Bernie intervened otherwise they would have been disqualified from the WDC aswell!

That is one painful memory for McLaren fans. The team had the WCC in the bag easily. And then all that came to light. Very very frustrating.

Even before being mysteriously left out on worn tyres in Shanghai, or the mysterious gearbox glitch in Brazil, Lewis had bettered Kimi in 2007. Kimi won because something mysterious happened at Mclaren that prevented either driver winning the WDC in the year they were punished by exclusion from the WCC.

Kimi won the WDC because the Ferrari was a great car, when you could get the tires up to temperature, and because he never gave up even when well behind in the championship.

I think he won it because of Mclaren cockups or FIA intervention in the last two races. Lewis was leading by what!.17 points till then! He'd trounced the field as a rookie. Which upset Alonso,,,,they wouldn't give him number one status ..so then we had the internal combustion as well. I suspect it was mad max who said something like...." there's no way you're winning either championship or you're banned for the next year. We'll take care of the WCC, you make sure you don't win the WDC'

But yes, Kimi was the one waiting in the wings to benefit from the political games, so credit to him.

One of the first things I learnt about F1 and its fans is the unlimited creativity/ability to rationalize why their favourite team/driver did not win a specific race or the title/s in a specific year.

Having said that, it's difficult not to join in, so...
Kimi won the WDC because the Ferrari was a great car, when you could get the tires up to temperature, and because he never gave up even when well behind in the championship.

:clap::clap::clap:

and...
...Kimi won because something mysterious happened at Mclaren that prevented either driver winning the WDC in the year they were punished by exclusion from the WCC.

At the risk of offending Hamilton fans, there are those who will argue that he won his WDC "'because something mysterious happened"" to Timo Glock on that last lap of that last race... :thedoor:
