We have seen schemes and even 'heard' the 2014 power units from Merc and Renault but nada from the boys in red. They brought an old heavyweight out of retirement to lead the development, which looked good at the time but could also point to the Ferrari habit of clinging to the past and could be flipped the other way. Then there is the bizzare public flogging of their own Alonso who has nowhere to go really. They have Allinson from Renault, why not Kimi as well? There are no other aces available.

I reckon the public 'no driver is bigger than the team' was for Alonso to prepare for Kimi. It wasnt Kimi who abused the car like Prost when he got canned, it was the team ditching Kimi instead, and so i dont see any reason they wont take him back if they have to compete against Merc and RBR for the next few years maybe of having the 3rd best car

Also Kimi would come with a lot of fans and feelgood for Ferrari who might be in need for that next year.

I cannot see Alonso going to RBR especially if they are confident of the Renault solution, Seb and Ricciardo would be enough, and cheaper

Even at the time I thought there was far too much made on this topic. I might be wrong but I don't remember anything that severe said by LCdM. Can you provide any quotes on Kimi leaving from Luca that I may have missed? In fact, I remember quite a few complimentary comments from the team on Kimi. I always felt the "bad blood" was more in the media's eyes than it was based in reality.

I think you make some good points here mate. Ferrari have been known to be slow on the uptake on more than one occasion. They literally have very little background on either 6 cylinder donks or turbo charged power-plants, so its hard to believe they will be able to produce something to match or better Mercedes or Renault - as those power-plants are their bread and butter.

Trying to bring Kimi back makes double sense IMO. If Fernando did go to RB then at least the team would have one top-line driver. If Fernando stayed then the team would have a very strong driver line-up for 2014 which may partially make up for any deficiencies in Ferrari's engines.

You're right Spanky!! I always thought it was a very strange situation. So "hush hush" and unexpected
that Ferrari would drop Kimi who was their last WDC in favour of Massa who didn't seem to have come
back fully from his accident. Much as I commend Ferrari's loyalty and support of Massa, I'm not sure
that was the "best" decision, in retrospect.

Now, I see operaman has a personal source who seems to confirm my own suspicions:

...the original plan at Ferrari was for an Alonso/Kimi super-team. According to her sources, this was altered out of loyalty to Massa following his terrible accident...

Who knows how this whole situation will be played out!!

Felipe Massa believes F1 summer break is important for Ferrari

Felipe Massa believes the Formula 1 summer break will be crucial for Ferrari to try to regain its form after a difficult end to the first half of the season.

The Italian squad has won two races this year thanks to Fernando Alonso, but the team has been losing ground to its main rivals and has not won since May.

Although teams are not allowed to work during a part of the summer break, Massa thinks it is vital that Ferrari makes the most of the time that it has to bring it closer to the front of the field at the Belgian Grand Prix next week.

"The development work is very important. We need to make this car quicker," said Massa.

"So it's a very important four weeks from one race to the other.

"We know that we have a break for everybody, and the team needs to be closed for two weeks. Nobody can work.

"But the working and thinking are important to bring new pieces for the next race, and have a more competitive second half of the season than the first one."

Massa feels the tyres introduced by Pirelli in Hungary may help Ferrari's cause, although he believes it will still take time to see the real effect of the new rubber.
"We've seen teams like Mercedes doing a good job on these tyres," he said.
"Our car was not as competitive as expected. This is the most important thing.

"On a track where the temperature is high, normally they [Mercedes] have more problems, and they won a race.

"So maybe these tyres will be better for the teams, but we have to wait a couple of races, on different tracks, to be sure."
