""We were struggling [last year] and we are still struggling," he said. "We are working in an external wind tunnel as we improve our one, which will take the rest of the summer. So it's been a problem, but we are working on sorting it out."

In other words 'our problems go back to last year and the radical overhaul of the front of the car when we did not have an accurate enough simulation system to properly model the effects, and so any other team thinking about the same, make sure your simulations are already accurate before embarking on similar'

especially if its only for one year

They didn't trust Massa to drive.

They called; but, I was busy!! :wavey:

Thay called me too but I said I'm not a big fan of Fiats. :hehe:

I have to agree with this view.

Why are Ferrari having such difficulty with their wind tunnel?

I suspect its not so much why Ferrari but more why would anyone make drastic and fundamental changes in this era of limited on track testing

Can it be any coincidence that RBR have evolved and improved what they have year in year out?

at the other end of the scale was it Wirth that proudly claimed that CFD would be the end all and be all, that tune was changed real fast.

I always think that the whole wind tunnel thing is an excuse.

If you have and item on the car the drag is 1 the down force is 2. you put a new item on the car the drag is 1 and the down force is 3 guess what the second item is better.

You could be right, especially when we see an expensive over engineered and over wind tunelled front wing get bashed on track and the car actually goes faster afterwards

In retrospect, I realize I should have been clearer!! :banghead:

Not going to pretend to understand the mechanical/technical aspect of F1; however, I would imagine that F1 cars are very much like thoroughbreds: any little difference / change to the norm, makes them skittish!

As for the wind tunnel, I don't accept that on-track testing can be replaced by what is little more than a truly sophisticated video game!! No matter how real any game may seem, NOTHING can replace the hands on experience!!

You're thinking of the simulator. Where the drivers sit in a pretend car . The wind tunnel is something else. They put the car in it and wind goes over it as though the car were going along a track. The engineers can then see how the car will behave on the track. But if the wind tunnel is calibrated wrong, then the results are skewed.

Actually, I do understand what the wind tunnel is!
Maybe I should have been clearer or finished my train of thought! :banghead:

On-track testing can't be completely replaced by any computer programme;
however, information gained from both can be invaluable. Maybe unlimited
testing is one extreme that isn't viable; but, is depending completely on any
programme any thing less than the other extreme? We need a compromise
between the two if this sport isn't to become a "game"!

((I think that's what I mean!! :D ))

Other teams have managed to make do with the wind tunnel and available road testing and Friday tests, why not Ferrari? I'm on the side of wanting to see additional test days but if a team has a weakness, then it should be addressed. Other teams have put a lot of resources into wind tunnel and CFD computations and managed to make a fast car.

I understand that, I just don't agree with it. I think any team should have the option to use whatever means best suit their philosophy. I don't believe everything needs to be regulated by the FIA, from how to design a car, how to test it, what to use to design and test it, to what tires to use at which race.

Where is the ability to create, to develop, to build? Where is the freedom to discover a new "thing" that works? Sure, there have to be some regulations; but, really? Haven't we now gone to an extreme where all you need is a computer to replace the human input?

Sigh...

Hey rules are rules dude.

I could say I'm an awesome meth cook and nothing's wrong with meth and produce the stuff to make tonnes of cash, unfortunately it's illegal. The sport is put in place with constraints like the real world, if a team struggles to adapt, byebye. Ferrari is not bigger than the sport, never will be...it's adapt to survive (win) like everywhere else.
