I don't make it a secret that I don't know everything about F1; but, I'm going to assume you're referring to Mr. Lauda?
In which case, my response will be that Massa is not of the same calibre. In fact, I'm sure most of the grid would probably not be able to come back from something like that!

In terms of driving, maybe being hit on the head can leave lasting damage in the skeletal/brain region which could affect the psychology of a person...but getting burned (no matter how badly) just leaves 'exterior' damage?

Good point, where one might be nervous around fires and be concerned IF he crashes, the other might be looking for flying debris around every cm of the track during a race!!

You think being badly burnt would not leave mental scars?

Different people, different buttons. But I would think a hard knock on the head can cause more damage than skin being badly burned due to the complexity of the organ/part....it's why brain surgeons are paid way more than skin specialists.

Seems a fair assessment all round except Massa. He's done better than to deserve a measly 4 out of 10! He's pushing Alonso a lot more than he has done in the past. Granted the results don't really show that but if you look at lap times it tells a different story.

Well you would say that. Your opinion of Hamilton has been stated frequently, so I'd expect you to agree with his assessment of the top four drivers. But most pundits disagree.

Why bring him into this conversation about Massa and assume that he agrees with the top 4?

Because I posted the link and commented on his assessment of the top four and Andrew replied saying it was a fair assessment all round apart from Massa. It was the 'fair assessment all round' I was commenting on.

yeah, I can see what you are saying, and dont totally disagree. I just read it that you thought being burnt half alive in a cockpit wouldnt cause any mental scars. Which I would find difficult to imagine - Massa's accident was over within seconds. Burning in a car would take slightly longer to pass out I guess, which for me, would leave massive mental scars.

Maybe that's why Im not an F1 driver though!

Massa had a good season in 2010 - outqualified Alonso in Bahrain and only lost out at the start, followed Alonso home. Then he dominated Hockenheim until, erm, he missed a gear* coming out of the hairpin and Alonso nipped past

Since then, he seems to be inconsistent. On his day he is excellent but not at the level he was in 08/09 on a consistent basis. Remember Massa for over a year consistently outpaced Kimi and, rightly got the 2nd Ferrari seat alongside Alonso. Had he not been that fast, he could easily have been dropped in favour of Kimi/Alonso.

*Apparently, some team messages were involved which made Massa slow down on the exit of the hairpin ;)

Poor Massa, I think he won't survive this year. Porsche has openings though, I'm sure they'll be looking for as many as 12 drivers.

This is going to sound totally harsh and out of line for a Tifosa; BUT, I don't think Massa ever "came back" after his accident! :(

Agree. But I dont feel this has anything to do with the accident, and more to to with the 'team mater upgrade' upon his return.

Really? Personally, I can't imagine how anyone comes back from that sort of horrific experience unscathed!!
There have been the odd comments from him about getting help, etc; but, the proof is in the pudding.

As for Ferrari, they've been very supportive and very patient where Massa is concerned, so I don't believe he's
being treated unfairly!!

I agree. Serious head trauma is unlike other kinds of injuries, and I think it is at the root of Felipe's problems. I don't think Massa has fully recovered, nor will he. Ferrari has shown uncommon patience and class, but it really is time to move on. Of course in no way am I saying Massa is the problem at Ferrari.
There is something dysfunctional about this team, and it has nothing to do with the driver pairing. Ferrari has one of the top drivers in Alonso, and Massa, while not returning to pre-crash form, has had some decent performances. Why a team with the resources of the Scuderia cannot mount a more consistent challenge is a question Luca must find the answer to and then act on. If he is incapable of doing so, then I think you have found the source of the problem.

Most people here know I'm a Felipe fan. But if I had to be totally honest, he has not performed up to his pre-'09 standards. The reasons may never be fully known, but the team has really given him every opportunity (and then some) to prove himself. The second car is not delivering enough and, the team needs to fix that.

The talk about who will fill the 2nd seat at Ferrari will grow, but this time it will probably result in something happening.

Drivers I feel are under consideration are Kimi and Jules. However I think the team would like to see Jules spend at least one season in a mid-field car. How good would it be to see Bianchi V Ricciardo in Torro Rosso's next year.

Winners and losers so far this season. Both cars and drivers. Some interesting choices in there!

Hulkenburg deserves a much better car.If Grosjean gets dropped or Kimi moves,he should go to Lotus.Such a shame watching him in the mid-field with that crappy Sauber.
