Long overdue departure. Bring on Ricciardo!

Ricciardo is more consistent than Vergne but could be like Webber's consistency, consistently 4th. Vergne is not consistent, is not a good qualifier, but to date has had better race results despite starting further back.

If Ricciardo can capitalise on his good qualifying result this weekend, then that could well improve his value and make him the favourite for the seat.

I have a bit of a bitter pill about Webber's retirement. I wouldn't say it's long overdue, as the timing of his departure has coincided with an above-average Toro Rosso car. If he had retired earlier, we could've been in a bit of a pickle, although maybe Alguersuari would still be racing....

But the way how Webber resigned, giving his team only 1 hour's notice just continues with Webbers consistently up-himself arrogance to the team. He has been extremely unprofessional at times over the past few seasons, and I am actually looking forward to the end of Vettel's partnership with him, which has been so strained.... (Of course, I acknowledge that Vettel has also been unprofessional at times).

Now Vettel can get a team mate who won't be consistently fighting against the grain. They will hopefully respect Vettel. (Not saying that they are expected to be slow) but there can now be an undisputed number 1 and 2 driver.

Ideally his new team mate will hopefully do a better job at finishing second when Vettel wins, or winning when Vettel is out. Webber has failed at this, and whilst I acknowledge his contribution to Red Bull's championships - I think he could have still done a better job at being a rear gunner.

Unfortunately I will only remember Webber for his constant complaining, his 1 win against his team mate's 11 in the the 2011 season, and "everyone is against me mentality."

The perfect team mate relationship is happening at Mercedes. I think Hamilton/Rosberg and Button/Hamilton epitomise the perfect example of a quick driver pairing who are also team players who respect each other.

The fact that the STR's are having a good weekend because their is a sniff of Webbers seat worries me about their drivers commitment.

I am also a tad concerned as well, but I think it is just coincidental. Vergne got STR's best finishing position since Vettel's 4th in Brazil '08 only at the last grand prix.

I think it is an above-average car this year, and we could potentially see a podium from them later on in the year.

This was exactly my wife's comment. If they can drive like that when there is the chance of a RBR seat, why can they not drive like that ever weekend....?

I don't think it's really the drivers suddenly improving, I mean, that implies Ricciardo has the pace to out-qualify Alonso and Kimi, they clearly have a pretty good car.

Also Big Azza, I'd say professionalism works both ways, Webber was fairly professional and good to the team, but well, they didn't return the favour.

Agree with both counts.

Is that a fact? Just sounds like layman hypothesis to me. I don't think these guys would be in F1 if they didn't drive as fast as possible all the time.

Did you see Kimi's last year with Ferrari?

He drove pretty well to be fair. Went on a run of podiums, got them third in the constructors too.

Point taken, but I still don't think we can necessarily assume that's why TR had a good weekend.

I agree, there's a little bit of both going on. TR is light years ahead of the Buemi Algueasari years and the fact it both a solid young drivers. DR better IMO, but the TR chassis like FI is a solid car that can an will get into Q3 if a top team falters.

He was outscored by Massa 2 to 1 before a spring busted Massa's skull. The car did better towards the second part of the season but by then he was paired with Giancarl Fisichella and Luca Badoer and barely beat GF in half of those races. And you're mistaken they got 4th in the Constructors. The point is that a lead driver leads... they don't just go along for the ride.
