so you don't believe the horse whisperer spanky?

I believe he's there to make me laugh :)

I know it's easy to say it isn't a harsh penalty, and perhaps I initially thought that, but, thinking about it, I've now come to believe it is a severe penalty and that it will most definitely hurt Merc.

It doesn't help. How much it hurts remains to be seen, then there's the fact that they DID already have a private 1000km test which should offset some of the loss.

Ultimately severe is in the eye of the beholder, and IMO it's far less severe than the alternatives. I think losing out on the WCC money would have hurt most of all. Plus already Mercedes has the spin machine going reminding us all that they took the high ground and have a blemish free record, so the PR aspect of it was important to them.

If Merc had not suggested the forfeit of the YDT, I wonder if they would have just received a reprimand. Surely if Merc insisted there was no benefit any punishment 'to even things up' could have been appealed and possibly won. As the FIA would have to prove the benefit, and if the proof was just 'any running is a benefit' then Merc could then turn around and point to the 'media' days etc run by some and not all of the teams as unsporting

Didn't only a couple of teams turn up last year? for the mid season one at least

I think there were a couple of options as to where and when they ran their YDT. So they weren't all at the same event, but all the major teams ran at one of the options.

Lewis thinks not running the te at Silverstone will hurt Mercedes. They had a lot they wanted to test.

I read the article, what nice way to kick your own young drivers Helmut. I just don't buy into the argument at all that you can't test with a young driver. I remember how many parts Ferrari tested in France last year.

Also, no matter who the driver is you will still have a baseline and then performance comparison after new bits are tried. You also get to run with all the analytical data logging attached to the car. Young Drivers also should have plenty of sim hours to baseline from as well.

Let's just wait and see how many new bits appear on the cars at the test.

One more thing, at the YDT, the teams are in control of what is being tested, as opposed to a 3rd party running their own agenda.

Mercedes chose to fall on their pocket knife instead of on their sword like was being called for. The tribunal agreed with them and we can move on and Mercedes can claim a squeaky clean image.

After all, Red Bull didn't ask Charlie Whiting for permission last year if they could adjust their ride height without using a tool.

A bit more background to this saga, which kindov shows that Mercedes acted in good faith and didnt instigate this test or set out to cheat.
Pirelli were originally going to use the older Renault based car, but it was stuck in the Far East following a demonstration.

They asked Merecedes who agreed to help but then found that their 2011 car was not in a fit stage to be used. That's when they asked Charlie and were told yes.

Also. It was Charlie who mentioned the test, not Nico or Lewis. He did It at a meeting with Pedro D La Rosa, Jenson Button and Sebastien Vettel, a meeting to discuss delaminations. The drivers then went back and told their teams.

Button and Vettel go back screaming to their bossies...Button's bossy tells him to SHUT UP since your ar$e is being powered by this company, Vettel's bossy gives him a choc chip cookie + the latest Bieber album, and jogs to Whiting's office to start the ball rolling. Anyone, feel free to continue this story.

When Button reports back to his team, he is told 'sshh we did a secret test with Sergio driving, however the car actually became a second slower, so lets just stay out of this law suit stuff'
