MILAN, March 18 (Reuters) - Ferrari Chief Executive Officer Jean Todt resigned on Tuesday and will be replaced by General Manager Amedeo Felisa, the company said in a statement.

Todt headed Ferrari's Formula One team when the Italian carmaker won six straight constructors' titles between 1999 and 2004 with driver Michael Schumacher. In 2006 Todt became CEO of the Maranello, Italy-based luxury sportscar builder.

Todt said he had wanted to stay at Ferrari while Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo was chairman of Italy's employers body. Now Montezemolo is back at Ferrari Todt said he could "dedicate more time to myself and the things I'm interested in".

Todt will remain a board member as well as chairman of Ferrari Asia Pacific and Ferrari West Europe. He will also be charged by Montezemolo to carry out special assignments for Ferrari's racing operations, the company said.

Felisa, 62, joined Ferrari in 1990 and was named general manager two years ago.

Di Montezemolo pays tribute to Todt

By Steven English & Michele Lostia Wednesday, March 19th 2008, 12:19 GMT

Ferrari president Luca di MontezemoloFerrari president Luca di Montezemolo paid tribute to Jean Todt after the Frenchman stepped down as Ferrari's CEO earlier this week.

Di Montezemolo thanked Todt, who left his position as principal of the Formula One team at the end of last season, for his service to the marque in an open letter to Ferrari employees which was printed in Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I want to thank Jean for his effort, passion, and competence that have been an example to all his co-workers. I know him well and therefore am not surprised by his desire to reduce his operating involvement in Ferrari.

"He is a determined man and true to his word, and having reached the objectives we agreed on when he became CEO he has decided to dedicate a bit more time to himself and to his other interests."

Todt will remain on the Ferrari board after being appointed as director of sports management, and will also continue to represent Ferrari at meetings of the FIA's World Motorsport Council.

Todt leaving is the end of an era for Ferrari, because he was the linchpin between the Schumacher-Brawn-Byrne epoch and the Ferrari of 2007 onwards. I don't, however, think he holds the same standing as Schumacher, Brawn and Byrne; Di Montezemolo was the one splashing the cash to help bring the infamous trio to Ferrari and bring them back to the top.

Look at it this way if Todt was to become the next FIA president atleast the McLaren camp would have another scapegoat to complain about, because of his association with Ferrari, for not winning a WDC or WCC!

Yeah I forgot to mention his every decision would be received with suspicion because of his association with Ferrari. It's enough the Ferrari fans have to hear constant claims of conspiracy by the FIA from the non Ferrari fans, a move like that would make it unbearable...

I personally think he would be a very fair president of the FIA, but because of his association with Ferrari I just can't see it being a reality...

I was just having fun with the idea. NO ONE associated directly or indirectly with a team should be allowed within the FIA imo as well as most other's.

I've been looking up funny websites on fences, but couldn't find one to post up...
