Why do I still feel like this 'smartphone' gadget is released to fulfill a created need instead of an actual need? I see my peers cracking their heads over their smartphones trying to get this and that and whatnot...and my basic dumb-phone of a Nokia continues sitting pretty and allows me for smses and calls without a hiccup. And it needs to be charged once a week...instead of once a day. Oh and I spend less than half of what any other smartphone user spends in a month without even trying.

The same way the home pc filled a created need, the same way a telephone filled a created need, the same way the telegraph filled a creted need, the same way the mail system filled a created need and the carrier pigeon and the smoke signal...

The need has always been the same, communication in the speediest way possible, but in today's world we get more of our communication from data than we do from voice. It may not be right for you, or andrew. (who knew you guys were so alike :hehe: ) but given smartphone sales numbers and the decline in PC sales, they obviously are allowing people to fundamentally shift the way they live.

Technology is not of vast importance in itself, but as a tool in which we humans can better reach our dreams.

You have a point, but personally my biggest issue with smartphones is its contribution to disconnection in society. Literally even a mobile phone is a distraction, I still get annoyed if I was out in a group and someone's cellphone rings but it's a small matter. However, right now you're connected to the www 24/7 a day...outside, inside, everywhere that you lose the moment due to a distraction in your pocket the entire time.

This most probably doesn't apply to everyone having a smartphone but at least people my age seem to be 'clingy' towards their gadgets, if you see something special, the instinct now is to pull out the phone and take a picture/tweet about it/tag the thing for what...I don't know, show everyone else you're living that moment? Except you're not! IMHO technology has its limits before it crosses a line and to me the smartphone (with it's internet facility) is at least crossing it. I admit I come across as an old soul....but damn, kids nowadays probably think of hide and seek, police and thief as some grandfather story....now it's all about blue-toothing each other's i-Pads and playing some sort of videogame. Everyone's focused on a screen instead of each other. It's basically my main motivation to stick with a dumb-phone, to be honest I'm afraid of a smart phone and where people (my generation and newer) are headed.

I understand what you're saying since what generation hasn't claimed that their generation was better than the youth on toady. Personally I think it's inherent in humanity to make those claims. But the flip side is that it allows a greater amount of people that wouldn't normally connect to be able to have social interaction.

Both my kids though uses their cell phone about 100 minutes a month, the usage is all data and text.

This I fully agree with. Especially at gigs and festivals. Everyone stands there, phones out, recording it so they can post up on YouTube to show how cool they are to be at the gig. Except they've missed the whole experience watching it through a 5" screen...... :banghead:

It's different but it isn't necessarily bad, just depends on how you use it.

Anyway, yeah, these things aren't needs, but I think people have fun out of them.

My main thing with mobile phones is, well, they are designed to be "catch-all" now, some stuff like music, calendars messaging work pretty well, but the camera is inferior to a specialist device, the screens are a lot smaller than a PC or T.V, touch keyboards on screen aren't as good as physical ones, mouses are better generally than touch navigation too, the screens are too small to comfortably read on, the games aren't too involving etc.

And well, because they have the facility, it's tempting to try and do it all on a phone etc. but its damn annoying I think, I mean, phones can do that stuff, but they just aren't as practical I think.

Even a tablet, I'd never take one over a lap-top or desktop PC.

My mates and I now have thing where if we go out for a meal all our phones go into the middle of the table. The 1st person to touch their phone pays for everyones drinks for the meal.

Ive never been impressed with the cameras on phones but there have been times at work when I've had to take photos on site, a camera would get wrecked pretty quickly if I was carrying it around in that environment so the phone camera's come in handy then. GPS+google maps is pretty handy too.

Hmm, I guess the thing with a phone camera, is you have your phone with you all the time, to take shots, but I guess I'd always prefer to use a specialist camera, even though the one I usually use isn't really advanced or anything, just a compact camera.

I find tetris better with the touchscreen. Admittidly though, when you get near the end there are times when the touchscreen doesn't seem to react quite fast enough.
