DIYing it always used to scare me in the 90s... unknown conflicts always existed. I remember buying a sound blaster pro and it took 2 weeks to get working.

Eventually tracked it down to a memory conflict

Ah, yes, I remember memory conflicts and IRQ conflicts, there was always a conflict between internal sound and the sound blaster back in the day, back when onboard sound sucked big time!

Thankfully those days are gone, gone also are parallel ports and serial ports that used to hog IRQ's despite hardly anyone ever using them, I always disabled those ports in the BIOS!

as you said saying things like RS232 are no longer used, and I have not done any RS232 work in years apart from a few week ago. it took ages to try and get the com port working as well.

The sensor uses rs232. It is what I was working on. May be I should of made that bit a bit clearer.

I used the RS232 for mouse and modem at some time, it was on a 486, that's still the same machine I've got now, just that over time every part of it has been replaced at some point. :p
