Could he not see the crane coming as he went to get it.

"As he did this, he stumbled and was hit and run over by the recovery vehicle."

The marshal could not be seen by the driver of the crane and suffered serious injuries.

The FIA said the worker was transferred by helicopter to the Sacre-Coeur hospital in Montreal for treatment in its traumatology department.

However the marshal, as yet unidentified, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday night.

It's so sad when we lose one of the F1 'community', everything else in the weekend pales when there is loss of life, my sincerest condolences go out to his family & friends. R.I.P!

is over 10 years since was it Ralf and Jacques had that collision that killed a marshal?

Yes, Ralf and Jacques had that accident at Melbourne back in 2001. Then there was that terrible opening lap crash at Monza the year before. Those were the days when wheels would fly off far too easily.

The really stupid thing is that this could have been so easily avoided. The crane operator should have been provided with a banksman guiding him as his view was obstructed the guy who died shouldn't have worried about his radio. So easily avoidable but these are the types of situations where accidents are most common and this time the worst possible outcome has happened. I sincerely hope there is a review of recovery operations for marshals and lessons are learned from this. As I said, it could have been so easily avoided. Really tragic.

Kind of my thoughts too, a lot of the marshalls being volunteers from all walks of life wouldn't have experience around machinery like that. That being said, I've seen a few people who should know better doing some pretty careless things too.
