Take a look at Massa and Kovalainen at the back of this picture:

It would appear to me that Massa is turning to avoid Kova, who he's looking at, even though there's clearly a bit of room, at exactly the point he should start accelerating into the second turn, and this may explain his spin. If you ask me he's not quite on top of that Ferrari yet as he either over-corrected or didn't predict how the loading on the tyres would affect his traction.

Or maybe a bit too eager to take the position and forgot he didn't have TC until the wall told him?

Massa had a bad race but he started badly last season and pulled out to race wins in a row to bounce back. Don't count him out!

I think it's a combination of concentrating on where Kovalainen is and tyres not fully up to temperature yet.

All these things might play a part, but the bottom line is that I think either this year's Ferrari is not yet the easiest car to drive, or Kimi and Felipe have not yet got the hang of it properly.

i think its a bit of focussing too hard on kovalinen and the cars behind rather than the turn, and with cold tires he had a moment and lost it

Good point but he just isn't consistent enough for me. He not as good as Kimi but then isn't quite in the position of a number 2 who will bend over backwards to help him out in the WDC. One day he's the best on the grid, the next he's making rookie errors.

Reminds me, in a way, of Juan Pablo Montoya's performances. They were all over the place, too. But I do agree with you - that is his main downfall. If he performed at the same level all the time, he'd have a great shot at the title. I like seeing him win races :)

He was a good driver. But he was often let down by silly mistakes. Like this:
