Why would Pirelli ask Mercedes out of all the teams. It was obviously going to spark fury with Red Bull. They should have asked a back of the grid team...

... or maybe McLaren.

It's probably down to successful politicking. If Mercedes managed to exploit a shady loophole this way (and call it as 'helping Pirelli') all power to them, the rest can just suck it up and deal with it.

Too risky a strategy as they full well know how difficult the FIA can be.

If they managed to get a 'receipt' of 'permission purchase' they probably thought the risk is worth the reward...if they felt they'd be able to get far in understanding how to cure their issues. As of now we don't know if they did gain anything tho.

Pirelli likely didn't want to be seen to be interfering with the championship so avoided the big 4 (Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren & Lotus). Plus a smaller back of the grid team may not have had the resources to conduct a test session.

Mercedes have been good so far this season but the past 3 have been below where they should have been. Plus, I think it's fair to say that McLaren will drag themselves towards the front of the grid.
