So why give permission for Pirelli to conduct 1000k of in season testing?

They can use a 2 year old car. Ferrari ran their 2010 car this week. Kobi took it for a spin at Fiorano.

I really doubt Mercedes (or any other team on the grid) would go out testing when clearly in breach of rules and they could get in all sorts of sh*t when found out. I mean, this isn't a kid sneaking an additional chocolate bar from the refrigerator, they are F1 cars screaming around an open track and word was always going to go out.

I'd be shocked if Mercedes don't have a case to defend themselves....and one thing I can be sure of is if they did not have any defence for this, the FIA would have lowered the boom. Since we haven't heard anything up to this point, its clear there's a lot of head scratching going on and currently a scapegoat is being sought after.

The email that Sky are talking about is not from the FiA but supposedly from FOTA (Formula One Teams' Association). Im not sure what powers FOTA have - apart from to chuck them out of FOTA - and seeing as its now only 7 teams as it is..... I cant see it meaning much.

Oh yeah FOTA...the association which Whitmarsh in charge of? The same association which Redbull turned its back on last year as well.

Not really, it's been referred up by the Stewards, who decided it was too hot for them to handle, also it was referred by the Stewards at the Monaco GP I think, this of course occurred not at the Monaco GP.

At anyrate, I guess I'll repeat myself, the letter says the testing, has to be with consent of all teams, which also matches the Stewards report to the FIA. . . yes this hinges on both documents being accurate.

Though some seem to have already made their mind up that Mercedes won't be punished.

Also, someone from Mercedes, said "they believed all teams had been informed", it's in one of the press articles I have posted.

A little bit more information into the murky depths of Pirelli. Apparently there are specified left and right tyres for the rerar but some teams switch them because they work better the wrong way round ( Pirelli got their sums wrong) if/when they go back to Kevlar, this advantage of switching the rears will be lost because there's no left and right with the Kevlar ones. More Mercedes fuss in the article too.

So it looks like months of legal wrangling is ahead, if Mercedes did indeed test the new spec rubber and new parts, that's going to be a big problem as that's a huge breach of the sporting regs.

I read that Lauda has a 50Euro bet with Marko that Mercedes won't be penalized for the Barca tire test they did.

All I can picture is Ralph Wiggum betting with the Mad Cat Lady on who gets to eat the glue paste first.
