Let's not overlook what Lewis is doing here... introducing Mercedes to certain aspects of how McLaren does things. So why get lost in the discussion that this is Lewis' doing? He's simply stating that for him, there was a alternate and better way.

Personally I'd rather go back to a steering wheel with no buttons and a manual H-gate gear shift, that'll separate the men from the boys, the more we automate things, the lesser the racing in my view. I know it's moving away from the topic a little but it's related, KER, DRS were technological solutions to problems caused by technology. I believe that motor-racing should be about man and machine, not man presses button, computer analyses it, then carries out command if within certain parameters. So in conclusion, kudos to Lewis for keeping it as simple as possible!

^^ it's a losing battle, in a generation, most people driving will not have a clue what a manual transmission was let alone why we'd ever want to use it.

I drove a Prius for the first time a few days ago just to help someone pull out of my driveway, and the gear selector was R and D the "parking' brake was a button on the dash.

That's really bad, because dogs can drive cars now AND they can change gear. Did you see the link in the Roscoe thread? It's an amazing dog! ( not Roscoe, he cant drive yet, its another dog)

This is true in the US but as far as I know, manual transmission is still the most prevalent in Europe, I had never owned or driven an auto until moving stateside!

I'd get bored driving along not changing gear and I'd probably go to sleep. Taking over cant be as much fun either if you can't wham it down a gear then floor it :P

Yeah, I started driving lessons at 17 (6 years ago), and all my subsequent experience has been with manual cars. Never tried an auto.

You mean you can take your test in an automatic then drive a manual? :yikes: the gears and the bite point are the hard part to learn when you first start driving.
