In this case the car was the deciding factor more so than the driver.

same car as Fernando and Nelson did not perform on par with him
compare that to Lewis the previous year and he finished one place behind Fernando.

Are you just outright looking for an argument bud? :?
Sorry I should have inserted that I'm not comparing the driver's only the car's but still I have have done nothing but praise Lewis and McLaren for having the best car on the grid.

im stating how it went last year and this year for 2 rookies, some claim Lewis had it on a platter this goes out to them... if you want to take me up on that then go ahead and argue with me

Piquet really didn't impress, but his race pace at least could have been affected by his contact with Fisichella at the first corner. Of course he's got things to learn and that means mistakes. Until he starts making the same mistakes twice his team will probably be happy to let him get on with things without too much pressure being applied.

Never mind the race, what about the total lack of pace in practice and quali?

No idea about practice, but apparently there was something wrong with his diffs in qualifying. He'll get better, it's just a question of when, really.

From autosport.com:

Briatore says no pressure on Piquet

By Jonathan Noble Tuesday, March 18th 2008, 17:18 GMT

Nelsinho Piquet during the Australian GPRenault boss Flavio Briatore has no worries about the performance of Nelson Piquet, despite a difficult debut weekend for the Brazilian in Australia.

Piquet qualified only 21st and then struggled with a damaged car until his mid-race retirement following a collision on the first lap.

But although Piquet's performance was far below the form that a charging Fernando Alonso showed en route to fourth place, Briatore says he is not worried about the Brazilian.

"It was difficult for a lot of people - there were only eight cars finishing," said Briatore. "Nelson had a problem at the back of the car and it was damaged at the start. He was managing to start quite well, because he was 12th at the first lap.

"But he's young and there's no pressure at all. We'll see what happens in Malaysia. But he can take it easy for the moment."

Briatore said he was very impressed with Alonso's spirited run, as the team just missed out on a podium finish.

"Fernando did a fantastic job. We are very unlucky with the Safety Cars – always in the wrong place at the wrong time, but Fernando did the rest.

"The car is much better and we'll see what happens. This is only the first race so to finish fourth is the best possible for us. We have development stuff coming and we will get a better idea of where we are in Malaysia. It's still very difficult to see.

"But when we put our act together and start really pushing the development, it's great for the team."

I'm gonna watch and see how he does, Symmonds said the team should shoulder some of the blame for Melbourne, so maybe he'll be better in Malaysia
