Bernie wants to increase overtaking by removing the present point system for drivers and instead crowning the driver who WINS the most races the champion!
What do you think?
I like it! Racing is about winning, not finishing second consistently.
Constructors Championship would remain the same as present.
This would force teams to decide whether they wanted their drivers to push hard for wins and possibly crash in the process or be more conservative to insure maximum Constructors points.
Would the tifosi root for Ferrari or would they root for the Ferrari pilots?

Well if that was the case in 2007 then Kimi would of won easily rather than by 1 single point. I wouldn't mind it as Ferrari as the fastest car so all they have to do is win more and basically the races they do not finish will not matter much, as long as they win more. :)

Its not the best way to determine the champion, its worse then the current system.

Say a driver finishes every race 2nd, another driver who df every race except for winning 2 would be crowned world champion? That dosent make sense. These are exadurations but possible.

If your 2nd place driver can't even win 1 race he shouldn't be champion. He didn't win!
If you have 16 one race winners and 1 driver wins the other 2 then the person who won twice as often as everyone else should be the champ. Consistent high finishes without winning would be rewarded in the event of ties in win totals. The person with the most 2nd place finishes would be champ in that case.
I think Bernie is going to get his way. He seems pretty confident of it.

You missed my point Im affraid. The current system is more accurate in determing the level of driver throughout a season.

But perhaps you should ask why Bernie suddenly decides to change this system.

According to the article Bernie thinks that too many drivers are content to sit in second instead of pushing for the win. He wants to see aggressive overtaking. So do I!
Here's the link to the article. http://www.totalf1.com/fullstory/view/248816/Ecclestone_wants_radical_points_shakeup/
At the very least I think the points for a win should be at least double the points for 2nd. Right now it is only 2 measly points. That's not enough to cause the drivers to push really hard for the win.
I did not miss your point, I just believe that winning races should be alot more valuable than losing them.

Then just go back to the days when the winner got ten points, second place got six, third place got four, fourth place got three, fifth place got two and sixth place got one. But scrapping the points system is ridiculous. If, for example, the Ferraris and McLarens are the only winners this season, but Heidfeld or Kubica managed to finish second in every race, he'd probably get more points with the current system and take the championship. I'd say he'd be quite deserving, especially if his car was still a slight step behind the McLarens and Ferraris.

I would like the system to stay the same to be honest.

I would rather have a Champion who scores points in every race, all teams have some issues during the season, and it those times when they crawl back up the grid just to grab a point or so, we saw last season how important that is. To me that is more fun than watching the same guy win week in, week out. Plus it could make it like the Schumacher era again, with focus just really on one guy.

If you go by race wins then Nigel Mansell would have won 3 world titles instead of just 1. If making it about race wins makes the f1 show better then i am all for it. To be honest though i like it how it is now as I don't want a return to the days schumi domination boring me to death.

I think it's a stupid idea, what if somebody won more races than anyone else but crashed out in the rest of the other races? I'd hardly call that a worthy Champion.
#35763
Bernie just needs to make a bigger difference in points between 1st and 2nd. Thats the only thing wrong with the current system

I think Ecclestone is taking crap. As I said before, Formula One is about more than just overtaking and I can't see why you should get points for race wins. I don't think it's right that a boom-bust driver should be rewarded; you have to be consistently good over the season. Second, say a driver does a stunning drive from the back of grid and gets himself into 4th or something. Should he not at least get some reward?

Finally, and this is a good one, it was Ecclestone who suggested the points system we have in place now! Why? Because he wanted to see longer championship battles. Ecclestone, you can't have it both ways: you're a hypocrite!

Actually I agree with you on that Racechick.

If you get twice as many points for wins than you do for seconds I would have no problem with that. I don't think consistency deserves championships unless it's consistent wins.
Racing is about being the first car across the finish line, everyone else is a loser. The great champions knew this, Senna knew this and that's the way he drove.
You all know that what Bernie wants in F1, Bernie usually gets. Don't be surprised if it happens.

Twice as many points is too much. The four-point difference between first and second place was much better, because it meant that the winner got suitable reward for their effort, but it didn't allow them to zoom off into the distance so easily - they could still be caught.
