I used to have a garter snake, they do bite but not very well and I got bitten on the nose a few times. The defence thing isn't too nice but I don't remember it rolling up into a ball though it did like to wrap itself around my arm or hand.

Yup, it could wrap itself around my arm 3 or 4 times and as WB pointed out it would sometimes realease a slimy secretion when handled.

When I say it bit me on the nose, it really just grabbed hold, it's teeth weren't big enough to get through the skin.

I know for a fact that both positions have been filled (one by a relation of a high-up) but the closing date is tomorrow so why shouldn't I apply? At the very least I hope it gets my name noted.

First day at my new job today. I think I'm going to love this place.

Mate you never know. You should see the job spec for the job I do now... I am massively under qualified compared to the others that do the same job role. It is all about buzz words
