How the heck is volunteering ranked so high yet paid work is ranked so low? Are the people that took part in this survey benefit cheats who have nothing better to do than spawn 30 kids?

People tend to do volunteer work for things they enjoy, hence the high fulfillment factor. Most people tend to hate their jobs, hence low fulfillment factor.

Obviously, but I'd rather be able to pay my bills, save a bit and hope for early retirement and then go off and enjoy life.

If you ever get into a position where you are able to give back to society without expecting any return, you'll find a new sort of experience..people call it the 'natural high'. So why knock it when you haven't even experienced it.

That's a risk I'm willing to take. Working for nothing would put me in the poorhouse at the moment.
