Pedro de la Rosa has been voted on as the new chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association, autosport.com has learned.

The McLaren test driver will step into the role vacated by Ralf Schumacher, who left Formula One at the end of last year.

As revealed earlier, de la Rosa was the preferred candidate for GPDA directors Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso, and duly accepted the position after a unanimous vote in Friday's meeting at Albert Park.

When asked by autosport.com after the meeting about how pleased he was to be offered the role, de la Rosa said: "The guys supported me, so I am happy to get the role.

"At the end of the day, I have been a GPDA member since I began racing in F1. The guys wanted me as chairman and it is great. It is great they have that trust in myself."

De la Rosa made it clear, however, that he had no plans to change the current philosophy of the GPDA, and that he would be working in harmony with the FIA over safety matters.

"We will continue the work the GPDA has been doing in recent years, and work closely with the FIA on safety grounds," he said. "It is nothing new. We are not going to do anything radical."

However, de la Rosa did say that he would increase efforts to try and recruit younger drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen onto the body.

"That is one of the big aims, to recruit all the drivers, everyone. We all have to be part of it because we are working on safety, and safety is for everyone.

"We are talking with them (Hamilton and Raikkonen). I will increase my talks and efforts to get them on board."

It's astounding that this cheat has been elected head of the GPDA. He was in cahoots with Alonso, Coughlan and Stepney, but is rewarded with a prominent role in the sport. Hopefully he won't get his hands on Hamilton and Raikkonen; he may turn them to his wicked ways.

By "in cahoots with Alonso, Coughlan and Stepney", I assume you just forgot to mention Hamilton and McLaren in general.

de la rosa is a test driver! how can he be head to the GPDA! I guess that this role is not coveted by the elder statesman of the sport who actually compete for title.

Eh? Hamilton was not involved, as proven by the FIA... Besides, you speak as though I am a Hamilton fan and that your comments are meant to offend me in some way...

No, my point is McLaren is a team and its members work together. There is more to it than just FA, PDLR, Coughlan and Stepney deciding to cheat

Speaking legally, de la Rosa was given immunity so the spying cannot be held against him. Other than that, the GPDA can elect any one they like.

No there's not.

No there's not.

That's very shortsighted of you.

Use the search function on the forum if you really wish to find my views and reasoning. I can't be bothered typing out what I've been saying since last summer and I've moved on from last season's events. McLaren look good in 2008, that's my main concern at the moment.

You forgot to nominate McLaren, beacuse not only Alonso and De la Rosa "cheated" (we don't know at the 100% what happened) last year with the famous book

Lewis was intelligent enough to have stayed out of that mess so no blame should be laid upon him. De La Rosa being elected is a farce of all that is sacred in motorsport's which to me is sportsmanship of which he proved he has none.

I'm finding this alittle confusing bud but yes I would have the same opinion.

I just read in the Sunday times that Lewis has refused to join the GPDA making him and kimi the only drivers who are not in it. He says he is not joining because he has a "lot on this season".
