I hated the double DRS zones today. Wasn't sure if this is a big enough topic to open a new thread but is it making racing a real farce? Drivers hardly bothered defending on the main straight with the advantage being so big for the attacker...why are TWO zones necessary?:thumbdown:

Two zones are not necessary. I'm not a DRS basher, but Shanghai is a good enough circuit not to need two DRS zones.

Having a DRS zone on one of the longest straights on the calendar is ridiculous!

Most here will know I simply detest DRS. It has no place in F1 IMO. It's there to provide lots of passes - no matter how boring and simple they are. It's an inane concept born of a desire to snare a large chunk of transient viewers.

Agree Spanky. And what with the tyres as well there's precious little opportunity for drivers to use their skill.......in driver on driver racing.

Like KERS and fragile tyres, DRS papers over the fundamental problems that prevent overtaking.

Overtaking is meant to be hard, not a mere formality at the press of a button.

Start a thread on the tires and I'll give both barrels to them as well :)

It's more chess now than racing. At one point Button was under attack (fom Hamilton I think) and he had to radio in and ask if he needed to defend or let them by.

That's f*cked up.

That's always happened when they're out of sync with pitstops/strategy, it could be detrimental to someone's own chances for final position to waste time fighting with someone he's not actually racing against.

That's what I'm saying. The DRS situation actually put Button in a situation where he'd just be a complete idiot to try and stop Hamilton since he'd only be hurting his tyres AND its almost no use anyway...when McLaren said "fight" I was wondering yeah right, dream on.

I'd be the first to say Button was a journeyman for just yielding to Hamilton on the straights, but he wasn't..the DRS was just a joke.

Wasn't part of the reason for it's introduction also to eliminate what DC described as the 'Trulli train'

The Trulli train was part of the appeal for me. A guy who can take the pressure lap in lap out and there's a bunch of cars stacked up trying to find their way through, those were the days! One of the key races where Alonso gained his reputation as a great driver in the making was in San Marino where he kept Schumacher in a superior Ferrari at bay for over 20 laps. If DRS was around, those shows would've been watered down instantly.

I know what you mean and I know every driver has the right to fight for position but the DRS does mean that the battles that do occur, and not just at the DRS zones, are more between like performance. For cars that are equal the battles can continue round the track.

On one hand you can say that DRS is making overtaking easier than it should be but on the other (pre DRS) you can say that the aero effect made it harder than it should be, even to get closer than 1 sec never mind get alongside.

I'd take DRS over a boring procession any day, and so would most people. Furthermore, people ooh'd and ahh'd and creamed themselves over that infamous Canadian GP a few years back, when Bridgestone unwittingly brought along fragile tyres, and Pirelli have been asked to re-produce that.

You get what you ask for.

1 DRS zone is debatable

2 DRZ zones are comical :banghead:
