Bernie Ecclestone says he is hopeful that the next manufacturer to enter Formula One is Korean.

Six European and Japanese carmakers are currently competing on the grid, but the F1 Chief Executive is hopeful that the Korean automobile industry - the fifth largest in the world - also gets involved.

"I would like to see one of the Korean manufacturers with us," the 77-year-old told the German news agency SID.

The Korean car industry is headed by manufacturers including Hyundai, Kia and Daewoo.

Why not? They're getting better and better at making cars.

Daewoo is owned by Ford now so favourite would be Hyundai. But I think that which ever compnay it is it would have to team up with another company with F1 experience - at least an engine manufacturer.

yeah AKR Fords kinda had their shot, whether through Cosworth or the Jaguar team. I cant see them coming back in

But what i would love to see is an American manufacturer with the technical team based in the US and not in Europe! Say for example GM getting in using Pontiac or Chevrolet as their name.

But hey id prefer a actual racing lineage like Penske to come back to F1

Reynard tried it with BAR. I know he was British but most of his success was in America

Alfa and Maserati owned by Fiat and they already have Ferrari

Now the thought of a Ferrari B team running last years Ferrari's with the team name Maserati/Alfa would be a good sight

Isn't that technically what Sauber used to be many years ago?

I think F1 is far to expensive for an indevidual turn up and finance a team, When you think back to the golden age, Williams started out as Race Car Preperation of someone elses chassis, I don't think that if Frank had to build his own car from the get go he would be where he is now

I always remember them as being a test team for new bit that they did not want to put on the full car, however I may be wrong on that.

Very much like Mitsubishi did with Proton for the Wire getting upto speed before it was renamed Lancer

I suppose so. It's just that, the Petronas engines were just re-badged Ferraris (much like the Playlife and Mecachrome engines were something else re-badged) and the chassis used in several years were very similar to, if not the same as, Ferrari chassis. But I suppose that is probably how it worked. I remember the Saubers using those weird winglet things on top of the sidepods and then, in the next race, the Ferraris tried some, I think. Before they were banned.

Doesn't GM own Daewoo?

GM = :( *LOL* Ford = :) *LOL*

It is sad that my beloved Saab is owned by GM. Pleeeeeeeease sell it and say Ford buy it. Pleeeeeeeeese.

Say Ford has had a flying start to the 2008 V8 Supercar championship after 2 rounds. Hehehehehehehe And Ford just won the 2007/2008 New Zealand V8 Supercar Championship as well. Nice going Ford :D

Sorry if it's been covered, I'll read all the posts in detail later - I would like to see more manufacturers in F1, but not as teams, as works engine suppliers to the Garagistes. The Garagists have little title hope if their suppliers are present on the grid as other, better funded teams. Hyundai would be a nice choice, but I bet it would take a long time to develop a race winning engine.

I'm constantly thinking of manufacturers left to enter F1 for engines. Since everybody owns everybody else, most makes are already represented in F1 by association. That leave just a few, like Hyundai, GM(who could brand their entry Chevy, Caddilac, Suzuki, Daewoo, Opel, Holden, Saab, etc.), VW/Porsche/Audi, Ford(one can hope), Lamborghini, Yamaha, Mitsubishi, Tata, Skoda, Lada, Seat and not too much else. Of those only a couple are not ridiculous.

Lamborghini, Skoda and Seat are subsidiaries of VW.

I too would like to see manufacturers involved as engine suppliers only, however, most engines are actually designed and developed by specialist companies, some are in the UK, but its the manufactures name that appears on the cam covers. Zytec would be a good example (designed and developed the A1 GP engine which works well and is reliable). I beleive that Zytec, funded by any manufacturer (Hyundai?) would be able to produce a competitive engine fairy quickly.

Yeah I figured some of the ones I brought up were further related than I remembered, it just emphasizes my point even more. When you count all the relations, there are scant few remaining manufacturers. I would love VW to supply a works engine to a garagiste like Williams, or Toyota to withdraw and strictly supply a works engine to someone. One or two manufacturers having whole teams is OK, but the setup we have now is ridiculous. Too many manufacturer teams and all the garagistes are supplied by those same manufacturers. That's why I lament the garagiste era. It's gone.
