Just wondering what others think of the mess that is the starting grid this year.
We have 2 teams breaking the current "no customer cars" rule (for one more year at least). We have Red Bull running 2 race teams. Fiat supplying 3 teams with engines, Toyota supplying 2 as are Honda. Now all the cars will be running with the new McLaren Electronic System. It's all a bit of a mess I believe and as such was the Prodrive entry really such a problem? :?

Not as bad as US open wheel and nastycar. O sorry nascar. But I'd have to say that stuff works ok in NHRA. I'm a huge fan of that. all racing is going to that. I guess its ok as long as ferrari wins.

Three teams breaking the customer cars rule. There's nothing wrong with engines being supplied by teams in Formula 1. It's always happened, because designing and building a car and running a team is hard enough. To set up engine development as well would probably put a lot of teams out. Well, those that are not owned by major car manufacturers at least.

The Prodrive entry was a problem because they would have been breaking the customer cars rule as well, with no plans to actually start designing and building their own cars. The other teams have a choice of either starting to build their own cars or else not being in F1.

That entire Prodrive situation is an example of the FIA with a good concept but bad execution. I think making teams design their own cars is the right way to go it keeps the value of competition going but Denthul is right when you say that setting up engine development would put a lot of teams out. As i understand it shouldn't Williams team be disqualified as they have Toyota engines?

They wont get disqualified yet, thy're not close enough to Ferrari.....but if they find a second or so then they better watch out :wink:
