Racechick, what is your stance on what happened today?

From apparently getting unequal treatment at McLaren to this at Mercedes, although it seems like Hamilton will make it so it doesn't happen again.

My respect for both these drivers has gone up immeasurably, although perhaps Rosberg moreso. Rosberg at least demonstrated his potential and drove home almost with his nose up the end of Hamilton.

I think Rosberg was more professional than Vettel today. I know I'm contradicting what I said on the other thread, but Vettel could learn a lot from Rosberg today.

Agree, my initial reaction on chat was "finally lewis has got a team that does what needs to be done to compete for a WDC" and i stick by it, would be interesting to know how much fuel Rosberg had left at the end compared to Lewis, but yeh you should never disobey your team especially publicly, i think Seb will have lost yet more respect from a lot of people today, but....things like this win you championships

Wow no ridecule of the Merc team strategy error deliberately faulting Lewis. Guess its only McLaren who deserves it. :hehe:

What's to ridicule? If the track had dried a bit more they'd have been ok they gambled the wrong way. Fourth still isn't bad, pole would have been better. They have more new inters if its wet tomorrow.
I wasn't aware Mclaren did a wrong strategy today and were ridiculed?i thought they'd be quicker on the inters than they were. Did they not change to new tyres either?

Oh so a gamble by Merc is okay but when McLaren do it it's incompetence...

Hammer this team "Brackley F1" are hardly new, only their current name is new! Mercedes did not start from scratch, they started with the reigning constructor champion actually...

I suppose the team could sort of trace its roots back to Tyrrell via BAR, Honda and Brawn. I dae say that some of the team personnel have been around for quite a bit more than 3 years.

Brawn's comments during the race when interviewed by Ted "We are against a top team who are used to be in front, and we're a little rusty at this so we'll see how it goes".

Doesn't take a genius to decipher that new people working together in a new environment, new strategical challenges, will equal to learning how to adapt together. Just because Brawn was great at strategy 10 years ago doesn't mean he'll seamlessly be great in it today, especially when his role is significantly different.

Bud, I'm sure this didn't need to be explained to you. :P

My respect for Ross and Nico soared even more today. Great strategy and very firm management. As he said it works both ways - loyalty between Nico and the team

If the team ask the faster driver to attack the Red Bulls and that means having to save fuel later then its down to the team to decide how to manage the other driver who was behind and didnt attack so much.

I am so glad Lewis is finally in a team that have common sense and a will to do what it takes to beat the Red Bulls and win titles.

Instead of the lily livered nonsense we saw at McLaren, allowing one driver to sneakily try to take things by deceit.

As for Red Bull today, shame Webber could forcefully take the place back like Lewis did with Jenson when he tried to cheat him.

Yep. The reasoning is clear to see. I can see why Nico is frustrated, but hope Brawn explains what happened in the race and I'm confident if the roles were reversed in the future, Lewis will be glad to return the favour.

Rosberg understands Mercedes orders

Nico Rosberg said he understands why Mercedes asked him to hold position behind Lewis Hamilton in the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Hamilton was slow in the final stint as he had to save fuel and Rosberg was constantly on the radio requesting he be allowed to pass for third place. At the end of the race when team principal Ross Brawn thanked him for the drive, Rosberg replied "remember this one".

When it was put to Rosberg that Hamilton had said his team-mate should have been on the podium instead, Rosberg said he knew the team would have made the same decision if he was the driver ahead.

"It's nice to hear if he said that," Rosberg said. "That's the way it is really, fair play from me today! As a team effort I respected the team's opinion. It's an important day for us, we've had such a tough time over the past years - even Melbourne - and so to be third and fourth fighting the Red Bulls is such a milestone and we need to put in some consistency.

"To bring it home third and fourth was fully understandable and I know that if it had been the other way round they would have done the same thing. So that's OK and for sure there will be times to fight between team-mates in the future."

Rosberg did admit, however, that while he may understand the decision from the team it doesn't mean he's happy about it.

"Just mixed [emotions]. From the one side I'm very happy because the car's going well and it's a great feeling out there to be right fighting with the leaders, the Red Bulls, that's really awesome and that's a big change from yesterday. So a big thanks for that to everybody; they've done an amazing job over the winter to make such a big step forward. It's really spectacular.

"Personally I'm a bit disappointed for me because I'd have liked to push until the end. I was feeling really good out there."

Following his radio message, when asked if he feels as if Mercedes owes him one now, Rosberg replied: "Not owe me one, no, I wouldn't say that because I understand.

"I drive for Mercedes ... so I'm pleased to be able to do such a great result for the team. But of course there's a small side of me where I want to go flat out all the way to the end and be up on the podium myself, but the time will come for that."

@Big Azza

I think I answered your question in the Malaysian GP thread, but maybe it's more appropriate here. My initial thought, when I saw Nico looking faster than Lewis in that last stint , was....they have to let Nico go. But when the bigger picture emerged, Fuel saving ,holding station after last pit stop, protecting 3rd and 4th etc was all revealed I felt happy. I'd still rather the situation didnt arise, but it did. Lewis, Nico and Ross have all sad it's equal status at Mercedes. I believe them and I believe the same thing would have happened had the cars been reversed. I'll be hugely disappointed if doesn't!
I don't think either drivers would stand for it any others way.

I'm hugely impressed wit Nico. He will beat Lewis sometimes. That's a really strong driver lineup.

Nico Rosberg: "REMEMBER TODAY" :twisted::twisted::twisted::whip::whip:

Ross Brawn claimed post-race that Rosberg was short of fuel as well as Hamilton. Have to say I'm struggling to buy that one. I mean he surely wouldn't have been so close if he was short of fuel as he'd have to run in a slower engine mode, as Hamilton had to do. However, Rosbergs postrace interview was very calm and mature. Good lad, just bide yer time.

Yeah, Ross was naturally evading the awkward question there...

He did say that both drivers were having to save fuel but I'd have thought Rosberg would have dropped back if that was the case.

I don't think Ross evaded any awkward question. He answered quite clearly what the situation was .

What, Rosberg REALLY was as short of fuel as Lewis? Didn't seem like it!
