This poll has confirmed my belief that there is a majority of atheists on this forum. A few on here already know I am a devout Jehovah's Witness, and it has not gone down to well here on previous threads.

I have a great life. I live very simply - working 3 days per week and paying $95 per week rent. The rest of my time is devoted to helping others, voluntarily. I have 6 Bible Students, ranging from 9 years old to 90 years old, but have had up to 10 students.

I am deeply disturbed by many religions and the actions they have done in the name of God. Instead of attacking other religions though, I can say why I believe Jehovah's Witnesses have the truth.

We do not support or go to war. Jesus said to love your enemies.

We remain politically neutral - I do not vote, even though in Australia it is compulsory to do so.

All our ministers are volunteers. The whole organisation and our preaching work is run by voluntary donations, and we do not get paid for it. We do not charge for our publications. There were 45 Million copies of our March Watchtower printed in 205 languages, yet we do not charge for it, and it was completely published and distributed by volunteers.

We rigorously follow the Bible's laws on morality and honesty. Basically we strictly follow the Bible and have no traditions from manly teachings.

We do not have politics in our religion - we do not give the Pope any special attention. In fact, Jesus said that we should not call anyone our Father or Leader on earth - yet those titles are everywhere in Christianity.

The whole point of our preaching is not to convert people or take their money from them, we just want to help those who will accept our help. All our publications are printed with the motive of HELPING people. We have no ulterior motive.

Where do you stand on issues like sexuality / equality / same-sex marriage and such? Just out of interest :)

Lew.

The simple answer is we follow exactly what the Bible says. :)

Addressing your points however, the main principle that we keep in mind is that God is love, and under no circumstances are we to hate anybody.

We do not support the actions many people do. We do not have umpalumpa before marriage. Marriage is between a man and a woman, only. The scriptures do not say people cannot be gay. It acknowledges that some were in same-sex relationships before accepting Christianity. But they were not allowed to continue on with such practices after being baptized as a Christian. That is based on 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, but it is supported in many other passages in the Bible.

Women are are a powerful force in our organisation - in fact, there are more female ministers than men. Men do have the added responsibility of teaching and instructing the congregation. Women still play a major part in our meetings, and are not treated any less significantly.

In the family arrangement, the father is the head of the household. They are obligated to care for the physical needs of their family, by working if they are able to. They also take lead in ensuring their wife's and children's spiritual needs are cared for. However, mothers and wives are not viewed as second-class citizens or required to be quiet all the time. Children are obliged to listen to their father and "not forsake the law of their mother." So mothers and wives have important responsibilities in caring for children and caring for needs of the household.

It is also interesting that we do not smoke, drink excessively, use substances, gamble, steal or lie. We are not a commercial corporation, so we are not focused on having a large membership subscription. But we want everyone to live their lives in a way that is acceptable to God.

One of the greatest benefits is that we are all very close to each other. And I know that I can go anywhere in the world, and there will be other Jehovah's Witnesses who would welcome me with a hug and invite me over for dinner. It really is special meeting someone for the first time, and feeling like you are close friends who go way back. One of the biggest trademarks of Jehovah's Witnesses is our united love for each other, which becomes evident during natural disasters. We had Hutu brothers dying for Tutsi "strangers" during the Rwandan genocide. Serbians and Croatians meet together in unity. We are not tied by international borders. In my congregation of 150 (excluding innumerous small children) - there are at least 40 different cultures.
