Damon Hill hopes the FIA can advocate Silverstone's cause to Bernie Ecclestone.
The Formula 1 supremo has long been critical of the British Grand Prix venue, and the race's long-term future has come under threat on numerous occasions in the past decade - especially as Ecclestone pushed to take the sport to new markets.
Former world champion Hill, the president of Silverstone's owner the British Racing Drivers' Club, believes the circuit's long F1 history and Britain's place at the centre of the motorsport world should safeguard the race, and would like the FIA to endorse this position.
"The sport has grown across the world to a host of new venues and the commercial benefits accrue to F1," Hill told the Daily Express newspaper.
"But it needs the traditional venues to provide a history and prestige which help.
"Each country has its own case to make but Britain is a very valuable market place for F1 and if the FIA could make that case to the FOM to improve the conditions of the contract, then that would be helpful."
Yesterday Silverstone unveiled the designs for its new pit and paddock complex, which is the first part of a huge programme of upgrades that will also see new technical, educational and leisure facilities built within the circuit's grounds.
Under the proposals, the pit area will move from its current location to the straight between Club and Abbey corners.
Hill revealed that Ecclestone had responded positively to the plans for the new pits, and that they could be completed in time for next season's British GP.
"I understand that Bernie likes what we have shown and given the planning permission, we will start building after this year's grand prix to have it ready for the 2009 race," he said.
Yeah, Hill. I believe you. New pit garages, VIP facilities and track modifications done in a year? Empty rhetoric.
I agree with him about the track's history, but at the same time that should not absolve the BRDC from making the required changes. Ecclestone, to be fair, is not asking for anything that does not need done, and, as I said above, the BRDC have not been as proactive as they should have been.
