I got into trouble in work once for asking a new bloke in the section if he had a boyfriend...

The convo went...

"What does your girlfriend think of you getting posted here?"

"Boyfriend?"
"No"

Apparently I should not assume because someone does not have a girlfriend that they are gay.

That's just normal banter in some work environments. You should hear some of the things we say on a daily basis.
