I got into trouble in work once for asking a new bloke in the section if he had a boyfriend...

The convo went...

"What does your girlfriend think of you getting posted here?"
"I don't have a girlfriend"
"Boyfriend?"
"No"

Apparently I should not assume because someone does not have a girlfriend that they are gay.

I would've stopped at, "No girlfriend, so happily single?" :hehe:

Looks like we've found the one thing you guys are as backwards in as the US. Victorian prudishness I guess.

When it comes to Victorian attitudes, check this out: Some Tory in Witham, Essex said:

As chairman of Witham Constituency Conservative Association, I am astonished by Mr Cameron's determination to proceed with this Bill despite objections from his party – and from the Church.
It is reckless of him to go out of his way to divide the party. Although tempted to leave the party I shall stay (unless asked to leave on account of this letter) because I am confident that gay marriage is viewed with disdain by the sort of Conservatives I respect. I hope that Mr Cameron does not drive too many of them away.

This sums up Conservatism in one clean, vicious sweep. No wonder so many of them are going to UKIP now.

Down with right-wing politics! :director:

But it as about to become one, which i think was the impetus for this thread in the first place. I believe it has been voted for by MP's in the House of Commons (dunno what your equivalent is over there!).

Congress....?

(my knowledge of UK politics is shameful, let alone US. My wife always had to keep explaining West Wing to me. But that doesnt stop me trying to get involved....)

It's just been passed in parliament. It's now legal.

what's the difference between gay marriage and a civil partnership ?

A civil partnership acknowledges the financial aspect of it, but not the social aspect. In other words, if you're in a hospital and they have family restrictions on visitors, then you can't visit your partner in the hospital.
