Interesting thought i meant to post about before... judging from the early pics floating about it seems Mercedes don't have an airbox on their new engine atm whereas Renault do. So we could see teams running Mercedes engines using old school roll hoops!

They would need an air intake somewhere. being single turbo, aero wise the best place would be above the drivers head as it is now I would think.

Not necessarily as cooling can just be increased via the sidepods. The roll hoop's benefit it that it allows better direct airflow to the rear wing. Combine that with (unless i'm mistaken) the new exhaust position rules that place the single exhaust outlet in that area forwards of the rear wing, then there's arguably a scope for exhaust blowing to be used upon the rear wing. So on paper there could be something there, imo. Conversely that roll hoop requires more cooling from the side pods, means larger radiators, etc, net losses to the diffuser area.

Any scoop you can remove improves airflow, so in the aero era, I wonder if that's a conscious sacrifice. This year's Merc did suffer from engine cooling problems early on and RBR has always sacrificed cooling. I'm excited about the Turbos and like it or not, the engine will have much more real world relevance.

They will need an air intake for the turbo somewhere in the twin turbo 80s days they had a scoop in each side pod. Seeing as these will be single turbos they will only need one air intake so for aeros sake I would think above the driver would be more effective rather than one side pod having a scoop protruding while the other doesn't.

You don't necessarily need the inter-cooler to have its own place it can reside in front of the engine water cooling. I'm excited to see differences in solutions.

Pretty sure the BMW engine only had one turbo...

"There will be a single exhaust, exiting down the centre of the engine cover, onto the rear wing. This will make exhaust blowing into the diffuser a huge challenge, but as the gains are so great it will be fascinating to see how the aerodynamicists manage to channel the air."

Bigger side pods all around next year then.

where has the single exhaust got to exit the car?

Think I heard/read it's the centre at the rear and angled upward so it can't blow the diffuser.

What happened to the rules before, they were meant to be bringing in chimneys that were angled upwards away from the bodywork a couple of years ago but that was scrapped for some reason.

Just looked at the regs, last fe w pages you can see drawings of the specs, remember camera positions are required above e cockpit so we will still have body work above the cockpit not roll hoops 80s style. Perhaps no air intake but something like a vane Mercedes ran with for a while in 2010.

I think Scarbs had a few sketches of that, reminded me of the spaghetti exhaust on F312. It was of course the correct way to stop teams using the engine (exhausts and overrun) for aero effects. I suspect the teams benefiting didn't want that and convinced the FiA to support their thinking. It would have been a challenge to tune the engines to the much longer exhausts, but doable.

Force India will use Mercedes engines when Formula 1 introduces its new regulations next season.

The sport is switching from the current normally aspirated 2.4-litre V8s to turbo-charged 1.6-litre V6s with more extensive energy recovery systems.

Force India, who have used Mercedes engines since 2009, have a new deal to stay with them "from 2014 onwards".

Team boss Vijay Mallya said he "could not think of a better partner as F1 enters a new and exciting era".

The deal was expected following Force India's decision to sign German Adrian Sutil this year rather than Ferrari-linked Jules Bianchi, who ended up at Marussia.

Mercedes were instrumental in bringing about the deal for Sutil to join the team.

The deal will make Force India Mercedes' second team following McLaren's switch to Honda engines in 2015, a deal which is done, as revealed by BBC Sport but which McLaren have yet to announce.

While i'm here, my expected suppliers for 2014:
Red Bull - Renault
Ferrari - Ferrari
McLaren - Mercedes
Lotus - Renault
Mercedes - Mercedes
Sauber - Ferrari
Force India - Mercedes
Williams - Renault (?)
Toro Rosso - Renault
Caterham - Renault (?)
Marussia - Ferrari

Question marks over Williams and perhaps Caterham though, cause i don't see Renault supplying 5 engines. STR-Renault is, i think i heard, a done deal (anyone confirm/deny that?), and i fully expect Marussia to have Ferrari engines thanks to Bianchi.

I'd be surprised if with the Toto Wolff move, Williams doesn't go the Merc route.
