And it should be noted that in race conditions the Sauber was second fastest car to the Red Bull.

Really? I seriously doubt that.

Well according to an article in this weeks autosport, where they were determining how good the Ferrari car actually was, that is the case.
Here are a few more statistics from the article

rawpace
McLaren
red Bull
lotus
Ferrari

Race pace
Red Bull
Sauber
Ferrari
McLaren
lotus

"Ferrari's race pace was unquestionably stronger, relative to the rest than its raw pace. Based on figures generated using the fastest individual in-race lap for each, Ferrari was third quickest."

Reliability
Ferrari 0 failures
Lotus. 1failures
red Bull 3 failures
Mclaren. 4 failures

I've not read the whole article yet. This information is from a table in it.

Are they using the cumulative average of laps completed to determine the race pace? Because it is quite misleading if that's the case, since Alonso finished almost all the races, Lewis DNFed a few key ones where the McLaren was pretty quick, and they are basing this on Alonso's laps VS Button's laps over the season. This would easily vault Ferrari higher than McLaren, which is unfair on McLaren since they did have a quick car in the race but their faster driver couldn't complete too many laps in a couple of them.

The cars are a lot slower at the start of the race as well. so the average for teams with more DNF's will be skewed

I'll read the whole thing through see what I can glean from it .

The only bit in the article that refers to how they determined the race pace is that bit I quoted."figures generated using the fastest individual in- race lap for each." Most of the article was looking at how Alonso used the machinery he was given.

He's only 22, there's no reason why he can't go for the championship in 2013. People were criticising McLaren for hiring Kimi after his first year at Sauber, similar comments and look how he turned out.
the only driver on the grid that has no chance at the championship is Massa. That's a fact. :P

Be interesting to follow our assessments through the season.

I think Perez would be very pleased with your comparing him at this early stage to Kimi - if he ended out that good he'd be one heck of a driver. From memory, Kimi won one race in his second season is a very fast McLaren. I'm certainly not putting Perez in Kimi's league at this early stage. Mind you, it did make me smile thinking of Sergio driving for McLaren for a few seasons then coming to Ferrari to actually win a title :)

You're missing the point...

I think the point is that we should wait. I'm not entirely sure Mclaren is going to have an easy time of things next year but they are Mclaren, they'll be able to develop a good car over the course of the season.

Yep. It will be interesting, though this is the first time McLaren don't have a top driver leading them. Since I started watching anyway...when Mika left for Kimi, DC was there and he was reputated to be a great development driver if not the fastest...then Kimi stayed while JPM came in to f**k things up, and then Alonso came in with Hamilton (the best ever pairing since Senna/Prost). Now it's...a new dude learning the ropes and...
