LdM had a few things to say, so here they are.
:director: Take what you want and run with it!

ESPNF1:
Luca di Montezemolo believes there were no available drivers faster than Felipe Massa when Ferrari signed him up for 2013 earlier this year.

Massa had endured a torrid start to the season and Ferrari talked to other drivers about a 2013 seat, including Red Bull's Mark Webber. But Montezemolo said there were few who could match Massa for pace and stability in the team was also a key factor.

"The Brazilian improved a great deal in the second half: in fact in the first part, it seemed he'd gone on a round the world holiday," Montezemolo said. "Joking apart, I think the decision to reconfirm his position was the right one: if we had changed, then one would need to take on someone who would make a difference and I can't say I noticed many drivers around who would be quicker than Felipe.

"Also, we did not want to change the balance and the good atmosphere within the team. [Team principal Stefano] Domenicali and I told ourselves it was best to wait and I think that the facts proved us right. Towards the end, when Felipe was even faster than Fernando a couple of times, the points he scored played a vital part in securing our place in the constructors' championship."

As for Fernando Alonso, who came within three points of the drivers' title this year, Montezemolo said he was like a mix of two of Ferrari's greatest drivers from the past.

"Fernando had an extraordinary season, the best since he has been in Formula One," he added. Next year, let's hope we can say it was our best season, given that we want to give him and Felipe a car that's competitive right from the start. The Spaniard is a mix of Lauda and Schumacher: like the former, he has the ability to drive every race lap as though it was qualifying, like the latter, he has the intelligence to know when it's time to push and when it's time to look after the car."

So they kept him to keep Alonso sweet from the sound of that.

When Felipe is on form I'd agree, he's up there with the fastest, but he's rarely been on form since the accident and since he's had his confidence ans self belief knocked out of him by having to play lackey to Alonso. A vicious circle which seems to suit Alonso and Ferari.

Massa can give Alonso a good run for his money when he's on it and is being treated equally.

When has he been treated equally? When he's beating Alonso, he's either dropped back grid places to help Lord Fonzo, and in the races the call comes on the radio "You're faster than Fernando, slow down".

In the exactly same car, without team orders from the very start of the season, especially now when Massa has found his speed again, Alonso would really have to do a lot to beat him. But, we all know how Ferrari works...

massa threw it down at the end of the season. I was one of the people howling for ferrari to give him the boot. However, he did redeem himself in some manner in the end. I would also agree there were few drivers to pick from that would be ready for a seat at ferrari. I do believe perez, the hulk, and di resta were ready, but apart from that, many would be silly to leave their teams due to comfort, performance, risk, etc. so LDM is quite right I believe. Massa was the man to keep in the end.

I agree with this. Ferrari are absolutely consistent. Drivers start the year on even footing. Once one driver has gained the upper hand well into the season, the team get's behind that driver. And it doesn't matter how big a star you are, if the other driver has the upper hand, you will be required to move over/make way.... end of story.

Pretty quiet around here ATM, so lets give this old chestnut another flogging :hehe:

Massa and Alonso started the year on an equal footing in Ferrari?! Aye good one(!) Ferrari will bend over backwards to please Alonso and his many sacks of Spanish gold. It doesn't matter what Massa does, he'll still be told to pull over.

Ferrari will bend over backwards to win, and they will expect Alonso, like every other big name driver before him, to do whatever is necessary for the team to win :)

At least with Schumacher, the other driver got a look in and was repaid for their sacrificies. Massa gets nothing like that these days whilst Alonso is on the go.

Rest assured, if Felipe got himself to a dominant position in the championship later in the season, just like Schumacher, Nando would be told to move over and let him past. :)

Pffff, if the world had ended today, that maybe would be possible...
