I got a letter from the swiss population control saying I need to provide an attestation saying proof of necessary financial requirements to sustain myself during my studies in Switzerland. What the f*ck is this about, anyone been in this situation before? How do I 'prove' I have the financial means to survive here, and who's going to back me up on that anyway? I mean, I've paid my tuition fees and have been surviving here for 4 months already...and now they ask this.

Show them your bank statement and proof of your income. I believe it's the same in the UK. It's basically to try and stop foreigners entering the country and becoming another illegal worker or another dole que statistic.

Yeah just rang a friend reg this and he filled me in, but what pisses me off is the deadline to provide this being this Sunday. Considering I'm a foreign student and I'd have to get a banks cooperation in giving me this, you'd think they'd give me at least 14 days. On top of this, I had checked up with the population control twice before to see if I'd owe them anything else to get my permit, and all I got was "In process, you need to wait"...so much for swiss efficiency.

Councils and public authorities are the same world over it seems. I've just finished chasing the city council for an invoice after they sent me 2 final demands for a housing benefit overpayment despite me not receiving any invoice. It's only taken them nearly 14 months to get their backsides in gear! Ah well, the money is better off in my pocket than it is in theirs.

If you have a chance, make sure you watch this movie: Die Schweizermacher or Swissmakers. It's a comedy and hence a bit exaggerated, but close enough to the truth (at least back then in the seventies and eighties) and you can learn a bit about Swiss attitudes and behavior. I went through the same process when I became a Swiss citizen, so take it from me - it's true
