There are a great many games out there which are fun to play, my personal favourite being F1 2006 on the PS2 because it's fairly realistic, the cars are actually at the kind of performance levels you'd expect (for example, Super Aguri are actually the slowest cars) unlike other games, notably F1 2005, where I won the championship in a Minardi :P

But if you could have a game exactly as you wanted it, what would it be like?

If it were down to me, it would cover a long period of time, say, 1990 to 2008, and during all this time you would see calendar changes, alterations to circuits, performance changes between cars (for example, you could race for Williams in 1996 and 1997 and be enjoying success, but in 1998 you would have a significantly worse car to deal with), driver changes and, of course, regulation changes, in particular the banning, re-introduction and re-banning of traction control.

I love the F1 games where you have a career mode, but I don't like racing the same circuits with the same drivers and teams at the same performance levels over and over and over. Once I get into a team like Ferrari or McLaren, what reason do I have to change to another team? Nothing interesting really happens after the first season, it gets no harder to win and no new challenges arrive.

So yeah, that's the sort of thing I'd like to see. What about everyone else?

That would be awesome. I'd also like to see an F1 Manager game with similar features.

I'd also like to see season details in the games so that what happens in the season is reflected. So if Alonso gets an engine penalty and fights his way though the midfield to score good points, we could see that going on in the race.

Even for games based on the current season, downloads could offer this.

Hmm, an interesting idea, Jensonb, though I'm not too fond of it myself. I mean, we can watch the races on TV, so replaying them probably wouldn't be as interesting as it would be predictable, and I like the fact that anything can happen in the games. As an optional extra, though, in some kind of feature maybe tagged as Historic Mode, it would definitely add an extra element of fun to the games. I think there are some F1 manager games about, but I'm not sure what they are like and I probably wouldn't be able to play them because they're PC games.

Oh yeah, I mean totally just as an option. Sometimes I want to have a completely unique race, sometimes though I want to see how I'd do in real-life situations.

There are F1 Manager games but the last one is for the 1999 season.

Where do I start? lol. I love F1 06 and F1 Champ. Edition, I think Sony have dropped the ball by relinquishing the license after putting all that effort into one next gen game. I was really looking forward to F1 07 and it never came. I was sure it would have been an improvement over 06 and CE.

I would like to see performance changes between seasons. I would like to see F1 games come out near the end of a season so they can depict car performance accurately. It would be good if test drivers were included and could be promoted to race teams. I wish A.I. overtaking was up to scratch as it was so easy to prevent getting passed in CE and 06.

It would be nice to see inconsistency in the pace of certain cars during the season for example last year, McLaren fast at Indy and slow in Australia compared with Ferrari.

I have the last F1 Manager. It's a good idea, but when EA lost the F1 licence there was no chance of improving a game which had potential but no doubt needed a couple more versions to deliver it.

I just wanna be able to drive the F1 cars at top speed through large crowds on the street. I could do that for hours :D

I heard about something some time ago where you play online during a real F1 race with the real cars positions being fed out and you race in among them. Of course if you collided with them you wouldn't be able to affect them if there were collisions at all. I never heard anything else about this but it might've been an interesting way to view a race.

I recall hearing about that too. I believe it was Bernie and Sony showing off a fantastical vision of the future. Would be cool though

I think an ideal F1 game would be truly realistic and random.
The physhics would be perfect, all cars would move at the correct speeds, and change performance accuratley depending on which Electronic controls you have on.
It would also have random car failures, such as gearbox failures mid race which would slow your car down and maybe end up knocking you out of the race, it would also have accurate flagging systems, certain flags would get waved at certain times, and there'd be a safety car which you have to stay behind, and lapped cars would be able to overtake at a certain time.
You would also be able to create your own car, adding aero-dynamic parts where you feel they are needed, and you'd be able to put company sponsor logos on it and everything else.

The closest thing you can get is F1Challenge 99-02, ive been modding this game since 2003 and still play it, although its now F1Challenge 1971-2007, ive been from the dangerous 70's to the turboed 80's the timmid 90's and working my way through the Political 00's

How about driving the car and running the team as a manager, so as the game went along you could get better engineers etc to improve the car. also I would love to have the option of debriefs, "slight understter at turn one" and your engineer changing the setup of the car slightly, I think TOCA Racing driver did the same sort of thing but to limited success

it is clear that on most of these games that nobody working on it is true F1 fan and so the recreation is not as good as it could be. It would be great to have a game where you could be team principal and negotiate your team through a season.

Yep. Jensonb got me playing GP Manager Pro, which is good for that kind of thing, but also rather limited, seeing as it's a web-based game. I'll probably have a go at making my own management game if I do this software development course, though... :)

I was thinking a while back that you could create a real Grand Prix manager game by having teams which bid for various real online racers...
