Then please educate us. I'd really love to hear it.

Violance against women isn't exclusive to any religion. Men have been beating women through the millenia, so religion has nothing to do with it. Very Orthodox Jewish weddings the men are separated from the women in the reception hall by a curtain and only children can traverse. The Amish in America have a long history of violence towards women and there is a tremendously high rate of incest.

Even in the US, the 'beacon' of democracy for the world, women weren't allowed to cast a vote less than 100 years ago. The point is to keep moving forward and have the regional cultures make that abuse of women not acceptable so yeah, many cultures did have a history of abuse towards women and some cultures still do.

So saying that a religion that's followed by a couple of billion people in the world is something you hate, isn't going to lead to anything but a downward spiral. How about working with the overwhelming majority of moderate Islamist that want to abolish that behavior amongst their fundamentalists, just as much as you do.

To clarify, I'm not trying to diminish or condone any violence or repression, religiously-based or not. But a few examples of those in other western religious cultures doesn't in any way justify the claim that Islam isn't more violent or repressive than any other religion. The fact of the matter is the very basis of Islam (Muhammad) spread the faith through conquest. But Jesus, for example, largely argued for peace and tolerance, and was then crucified. The fundamental messages are completely different.

Yeah, moderates may use pretzel logic to make the Qur'an fit their beliefs, but why bother at that point? If you disagree with the fundamental message of your religion, shouldn't that tell you something?

When me and my classmates left primary school, we each had a bible given to us. It was called a "Youth Bible".

I looked at it again recently. I didn't really know what to expect. Would an edition released for "youth" of the late 90s/early 2000s be more relaxed / sympathetic to our modern, more understanding, more accepting world? No.

There was an index at the front. I looked up homosexuality. This is an issue VERY important to growing up, and one would assume that modern youth holy books would take it very seriously. But in this "modern youth bible", homosexuality is still termed a "sin". Young readers of the bible with concerns about their sexuality were told to see their nearest pastor / rector immediately for help on how to escape falling into the trap of this "sexual sin".

How on earth does the bible and other holy books even hope to retain any respect in the modern world? God knows

Who actually knows what the message of the Quran is in this forum, to disagree with it?

This is a fascinating read.

"A new study in the academic journal Theoretical Criminology (hat tip to the Vancouver Sun) suggests that, far from causing offenders to repent of their sins, religious instruction might actually encourage crime."

reading through this thread I'm shocked. A topic on religion on the Internet has more respect and less arguments than a thread on Lewis Hamilton.

I'm a Jedi too. No actually I'm a Sith. All scum will now die!!!! Only joking of course. I worship Ferrari........ Lol just kidding again. I'm catholic but I'm slack. I usually only go to church on Easter and Christmas.

Atheism is a non prophet organisation

I am a Jedi

Nah to be honest, I have no belief in a deity, or in anything really apart from man kind to try and do what is right... sometimes I even feel let down by that. I do sort of like the concept of Karma that Buddism encompasses.

One think that does worry me about religion is extremists, of any religion.
