You can rest assured that Vettel will have the alternator of the millennium installed in that Renault engine come Sunday. :hehe:

A penalty of an even number of grid slots wouldn't have changed much, Ferrari were focused on what effect it would have on Alonso.

It's debateable, I think Ferrari were more keen to get Alonso out of the dirty side than they were moving him up one spot on the grid and that would be solved by an even number penalty. It would also not effectively punish/reward other drivers since it would affect everyone down the line.

It was Massa who got the penalty, whether he was moved 5 or 6 places would make no difference to where Alonso moved to.

You're missing one thing, Alonso had moved to on an even grid slot because Grosjean was penalized, moving everyone behind moving Alonso one spot and therefore at a disadvantage on the dirty side. Massa's move was to undo the damage done by Grosjean with the added benefit of moving him up another spot.

Regardless of the intent though, it still wreaks havoc onto others, when they get move from the clean side to the dirty side. The difference is not that great in some tracks but here because of the circuit being virgin, dust, oil etc, it was abysmal.

Grosjean's drop doesn't really have any bearing on the issue, imo the issue is the rules allowing a team to deliberately re-shuffle the grid to their advantage. I don't think anyone would drop a driver 5 places just to get him onto the clean side and the way things worked in this situation Alonso was moved up 1 and onto the clean side, making the penalty an even number of places wouldn't have made any difference to where Alonso ended up. Massa would still have been on the dirty side but I doubt Ferrari would've been too worried about that.
I think we agree that it's not good that this can be done but an effective solution or deterrent won't be easy.

Anyway...

Im really looking forward to this race. I just hope it can live up to the expectation.

I would love for it to rain in Quali, and totally mix it up.

Grid: Ferrari 1-2. Hamilton 3rd. Vettel to be 9th.

Vettel spends the race charging up the field and gets up to 5th (with only a few laps to go), behind Massa who has slipped to 4th. Massa would hold Vettel up for 3 laps, only to be overtaken on the final lap in a daring dive down the inside of turn 1 - moving Vettel up into 4th and winner of the WDC, even though Alonso had taken the race win. The RedBull garage would explode, everyone would be wetting themselves with joy....... only for the alternator to pack up between turns 3 and 4, and for Massa to pop back past, and the WDC really going to Alonso.

Then whilst on the podium, I would like Hamilton (who finished 2nd, and took 3rd in the overall standings), to throw the champagne down to the McLaren Engineers as a mark of respect for all their hard work over the years.

Hamilton then turns to MW, opens his race suit to reveal a Mercedes AMG Petronas tee-shirt, give himImage and walk off.........................*

---------------------------------------------------------------------

However, in reality, I fully expect Vettel to dominate the race weekend, and the season to finish with the feeling of a damp squid.

*I think my maths is right, and that all works, but if it isnt, I dont care - this is my fantasy.

There would be a few thousand cardiac arrests world wide attributed if that were to happen regardless of which team or driver you support.

It would be an epic finish, to what I think has been an epic season....

It will be a great race, like the whole season was. I don't think that neither Vettel or Alonso will win. I expect 2 of them to fight for the podium. :D Winner will be decided between Hamilton, Massa, Button or Raikkonen, still unclear about it. :D

I think Vettel will be hardest to beat here. What impressed me most about Vettel was Abu Dhabi 2010, when he came from 3rd place to dominate that last race and take the Championship. That's a major strongpoint in Vettel, when the pressure is really on he seems to deliver his best. Something I can't say the same about Alonso to be honest, he's cracked under pressure quite a few times....and in terms of WDC pressure, looking at his erratic driving in Abu Dhabi that same race and also making mistakes by going off track in Austin.

Redbull's major worry would be reliability...since I don't see Vettel buckling under pressure when he has a comfortable lead. Especially if he has Alonso behind him in the race, he'd probably be more worried about winning the race than the Championship, like he did in Austin swerving in front of Hamilton risking a collision!

We are also forgetting that everyone will be driving on worn parts, especially engines... It's gonna be a lottery with that, but, yes, you've got the point about Vettel, Hammer. He delivers when it's needed.

Im liking your Avatar change Vlad. Is this in prep for the last race...? Every little helps...

Thanks man. :)
It's not connected with the race at all. It's my admiration for the man that meant and means a lot to me and to my people.

Excuse my ignorance, who is he?
