I've heard Michelin might be coming back. So then there'll be another tyre war and we get fast tyres again :D not till 2014 though if it happens.

What did people think of the tyre war? I mean, I just look back to Bridgestone's superiority over Michelin in 2002 and 2004 and just wince....

Err..actually Michelin was roundly applauded as the better tyre, if you take away the USA debacle.

Fact was that Michelin provided generic tyres for all its' clients without specializing to anyone's needs. Bridgestone on the other hand, were existing simply for Ferrari and working the tyres around the Ferraris while everyone else just had to make do with the changes and updates to the tyres. Which is the reason you see majority of Michelin runners in the Top 10, and the famous 1-2 being Bridgestone shod Ferraris. The other Bridgestone runners will normally be way outside the top 10.

Indeed, but had the whole field been on one tyre, then I feel things would've been a whole lot closer at the front.

Because they were midfield or backmarker teams to begin with

Indeed...since the midfielders and more competitive cars were not settling for leftovers which was what Bridgestone was providing. The backmarkers had no choice...which supports my point.

Tyre wars are always awesome. They always have the potential for curveballs, i mean i just have to look back to Panis' adventures on the Bridgestone-shod Prost in 1997... :cloud9:

I liked the tyre wars. Ok we had Bridgestone working for Ferrari, which was not so good. But if the tyre manufactures don't affiliate, but work to get the fastest tyre generally, then that has to be to the good. And we wouldn't have silly go slow tyres.

Tyre wars aren't even playing fields. One tyre for all to make your car around is perfect. May the best team win, nice and simple.

But that way lies spec cars. Same tyres, same engine same this same that. And it stops us getting the best available tyre. It's already not a level playing field for many reasons. Teams would have choice who they go with, it would be up to the tyre manufacturers to produce an attractive tyre and the teams to make an inspired choice.

how is that spec cars? they (each team) design the car from the chassis up around the tyres, this is far from spec. If you cant get the tyres to work as well as the next team then bad luck thats the name of the game.

What I mean is why pick tyres? To standardise. Why not say you all get the same engine and design round that, or you all get the same rear wing, design round that. I think the whole lot should be choice.

I think the difference that bud is getting at is that those components are under the control of the teams, they can change those to increase performance and reduce car issues. The teams have no way of changing the tyres, which are provided by an external supplier.

Yes, I agree. The previous tyre war was part and parcel of one team's massive dominance, and I prefer a WCC to be won on best CAR rather than all sorts of different factors such as tyres. Just my opinion though.

Exactly, to be fair would require each team to have their own tyre supplier. In tyre wars the tyre makes pick who they think will win for them and focus around them. This reason alone is why i never will and never have liked tyre wars.

ESPNF1: Paul Hembery has revealed that the 2013 Pirelli tyres will change the aerodynamics for the teams next season.

Pirelli is supplying two sets of prototype tyres for Friday practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix in order to give the teams an opportunity to gather some data around which to develop their 2013 cars. However, while Hembery said the regulations meant the cars themselves are not due to change too much, the new profile tyre will have an effect on the aerodynamics at the rear of the car.

"Well the cars at least this year are not going to change too much between this year and next year," Hembery told ESPN exclusively. "From that point of view we're hopeful of not having any big surprises and that I think for the teams is also a positive. Although we know that the changes we've made will have an influence on things like aerodynamics for the teams; it will deflect more, the rear tyre in particular."

Hembery added that he suspects some teams not chasing championship positions could focus on analysing the tyres fully on Friday.

"I think for the teams point of view it is an opportunity to gain a lot of data, and those who are maybe not competing for points or a position in the championship then will use that to take home as much data as possible."

I hate stories like this that are not interactive because they lead to more questions and speculation than they provide answers. What does "it will deflect more" mean? More tire side wall deflection, more air deflection around the rear?

On another note, I've also changed the title of this thread to better reflect future evolution.
