Ross is making that same sort of noises that he did in 08 with Honda

Like he did just before he brought out that rocket ship? :cloud9::cloud9::D:D:D

I wouldn't read anything into this unless Max Mosley was still on the go.

I remember thinking Brawn seemed quietly confident before the start of this season and then a bit surprised in an interview after the Australian qualifying.
I think it's possible Merc could build a decent car but I doubt it could be a repeat of the Brawn. I've still never really understood why Honda pulled out when they did unless it was because they couldn't build a decent engine to compliment the rest of the car and understandably wouldn't want to be Honda-Mercedes.

I don't think a repeat of that Brawn year is ever likely again in modern F1...that was the ultimate freak year in the history of this sport.

If there was 1 doubt I have regarding Merc's capabilities, it would mirror most concerns here; if they can keep up with the likes of the current top 3 in developments. I assume when they say 'things are in place for 2013' it would mean having a good car from the outset and finishing the season better than they started it.

I think Brawn and co, are good at seeing the loop holes before anyone else. Newey on the other hand is a bit slower on seeing the loop holes but when he does he maximises on it.

Myown!! Back in the day we'd have been firmly on the same side :D

but with Lewis its nothing to do with him being British, its to do with him being best

If we were on the same side; the world would actually end... besides, I like the banter, but Alonso is clearly the best driver in F1 currently! ;)

For the past 3 years they've had whom many regard as the greatest of all time in Scumacher and look how they've gone. You're overestimating Mercedes and underestimating McLaren as usual, I'm confident you'll have egg on your face next season, and if you have the balls ill put money on it with you!

MS obviously isn't the best anymore if he was beaten 3 years in a row by Nico :nono:

yeah Ill take the bet, I already have a couple on with very good odds, but I suspect yuo will be wanting to give me evens?

$100 at market odds or $10 evens and the loser donates it to the site?

Oh so Nico is a slouch too? Can't develop a car like Lewis or something? Lewis has trouble picking the right wing then tweets his anger but hey he will make Merc magnificent because you say so!

And no market odds just a simple bet, money either way which team finishes higher than the other. I'd be happy to add another zero but $100 USD is fine by me.

I like the banter too :D ..........but Alonso isn't clearly the best, it's very close, and all things being equal Lewis gets the nod.

I think it's very close between Alonso and Lewis, i have to be honest and say that Alonso is one hell of a driver. You have the Alonso and Lewis's of F1 then the finger boy in the fastest car and then you have mid range but beyond that you have the cruise and collect specialists..ie Button and co.

Alonso had IMO had the best year as a driver in his career. Hamilton has IMO the best year as a driver in his career. I don't know if the same can be said for Vettel although he's also had a stellar year, going solely by the numbers as some of his more fans seems to go, it's going to be extremely difficult to top 2011. But again IMO, he's driven the best he's had in his F1 career.

So to me, the same three names come up, I'd not be sure where to Place Kimi here because the car itself has never performed to the capability of the leading teams, and he's where he is the same way Alonso is where he is, consistency and reliability.

I'm certain that if you flip flopped Alonso and Lewis, you'd get the same points results. I'm not so sure if you swapped Vettel and Alonso that you'd get the same points results.

But since this is a Mercedes thread, I wanted to bring it back to that. Mercedes scored a coup by getting Hamilton to commit to work with them for the next three years. And their capacity to win a championship because of his move had greatly increased.

Conversely, the capability to win a championship on the Mclaren side of things has decreased. I'm not saying they will or won't but from a statistical likelihood standpoint, it would be insane to argue against that.

I really agree with you on this and i have a feeling that it's going to be a painful season next year when some find out that Lewis is not at the back of the field or mid field but at the front fighting like he has been in the Mclaren.

wise up mate!

I can stake 100 or 1000 or 10000 at much much better odds than evens, i.e. bookies and other people are willing to pay me 700 back for risking 100 IF Merc beat Mclaren. And you are so confident of Merc that you are not willing to do the same?

Anyway I knew yu wouldnt/couldnt get it. What do you think odds are there for?

No doubt he's a hell of a driver, but you can't base him as the best driver on anything. Logic tells me that he was at least equalled by a rookie in 2007 (team orders bullsh*t or not, since McLaren lost faith in Alonso only after the blackmails/backstabbing started and Lewis was LEADING Alonso at the time) and right now he's definitely a top 3 driver. But the best? I see this everywhere, and apart from Alonso being undoubtedly no.1 in self-marketing himself as the best and his car as a dog, I can't understand how people come to this conclusion.

It's all a matter of opinion, the best varies depending on view point and it's not worth arguing about it, IMO, both Lewis and Alonso are better drivers today than they were in 2007.

The only sure thing left for this year is that we'll have a new three time WDC, and instead it could have been three 2 time WDC drivers, but it was not to be. McLaren made it so, Lewis felt it was time to move on because of it. I'm sure he would not have made the decision to move to Mercedes were he in the thick of things with Vettel and Alonso.

Partly because it's meant to be a joke as a reply in banter to RC's opinion that LH is the best driver; and in the last few years I have been very impressed with Alonso on and off the track, Alonso has driven brilliantly in a car that should not be getting race wins or podiums, he isn't outdriving the car but he is getting every last bit of speed out of it; and of course it's my opinion!
