They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

...lest we forget

I'm in a tiny village in Notth Wales, Beddgelert. There's a war memorial there with loads of names on. Most of the young men in the village must have died in the war. There'll be a wreath laying ceremony at 11 am. So I think I might pop along and see it.

I am in work, but still popping over to the local memorial. We have a few new names on it since last year around here.

So important to remember those that gave their lives. In wars not of their making, so many young men never questioned or wavered, but simply did their duty, in so many cases right until the end.

My great, great uncle was in the navy, and was killed in the battle of Jutland in WWI. My gran's first husband, and the father of her first child / my oldest aunt, was a fighter pilot killed in WWII. My great uncle was in the army and was killed in the Normandy invasions and is buried in France - I visited his grave in 1992 when I also went to the French GP.

Here's a few pics from the remembrance ceremony in the village. It was absolutely silent for the two minutes apart from the sound of the river and birds. I was talking to a lady who's grandmother's brother's name was on the monument. She said her grandmother never recovered from his death. She lost all her other brothers and sisters to TB in childhood, had only that brother left then lost him in the war. There must be so many sad stories like that.

If politicians had to fight in wars there would be no need for soldiers. My respects to the fallen.

If politicians had to fight, there would be no wars!

I may not agree with war but I have the utmost admiration and respect for those who fight and die defending the world from evil!

This is a myth in an era where it's popular to trash public servants, many of whom do a good, honest job which is spoiled by those that play the system, fiddle expenses etc.

Wars have gone on for as long as mankind has. All that would happen without politicians is that the wars would be on smaller scale and over different issues. As things stand, wars are often political in nature, but over the centuries and millenia wars have traditionally related to territory, culture, religion, revenge etc. some of which can be viewed as political in a modern sense, but at the time were just issues that people fought over through common agreement.

Many more wars have been avoided than started as a result of political negotiation in modern times and pressure, that's a fact.

I have great respect for your opinion, Zurich Allen but on this occasion, I simply can not agree, if politicians had to fight the wars they start, there would be no war, it's easy to send other men and women to fight commercial and political wars, usually American led wars in recent times, often against public opinion. When you look at recent wars, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, these are self serving wars all about oil under the guise of liberation. If western governments are so concerned about making this a truly free World, why don't they go in and help war torn African countries?

I do however agree that war happens, especially in middle east/African nations, that's the way it has been for thousands of years as you pointed out; but western governments plod into what is part of the culture in these countries, interfering in civil wars. At the end of the day, it all comes down to oil for western countries. I'm not attacking civil servants; those people do a good job in general, it's the people at the top that I take issue with, sending our troops to fight in foreign wars against the will of the people they represent!
