The only way to do that imo would be to either severely restrict aero design or more probably introduce a lot of standardised parts.

It could be achievable; just enforce a limit on how many KG of downforce can be generated, but not limit design, same goes for the motor, have a fuel cap, and engine designers can have free reign! Create innovation instead of stiffing it while setting limits.

They'd need to set up wind wind tunnels at the circuits for scrutineering.

Or alternatively; fit sensors to every car that feeds telemetry back to the FIA! I suspect that maybe the cheaper option!

I think the problem with downforce limiting is that if you say at 100mph you are only allowed to produce x amount of down force. The boffins will use things like stalling aero devices to achieve the requirements at that speed but do what they want at other speeds.

I've ALWAYS maintained a steadfast opinion on DRS. And it's a positive one.

I'm all for it, unless there's a better solution.

I'm no engineer so I'm likely wrong about this but why not just have the a maximum downforce limit at any speed, maybe with a 2% discrepancy, which will be at different speeds at different tracks; at venues like Monza the maximum will be at a higher speed than Monaco, the whole point of a limit is that it is absolute; regardless of what speed the car is traveling.

On a motorway, the speed limit doesn't increase because you have a faster car with better brakes, a limit is a limit, otherwise it's pointless.

Why is F1 the only racing series that needed DRS? The answer to that question is more poignant than having found something that's "saved" the sport in the opinion of some.

Cause (imo) F1 is quite up its own backside sometimes and they think the simple push to pass power boost like they use in Indycar is too 'basic' for the supposed pinnacle of motorsport. So we end up with this ridiculously contrived and actually unnecessarily complex system.

There may still be some hope in all this come 2014 though. I believe the rules will require narrower front wings and much shallower rear wings, which gives an instant and perhaps sizeable downforce loss. So less dirty air, in theory. The lower power of the engines should also make slipstreaming a bit more effective. Then you add in the greater ERS potential, and we might just end up with a situation whereby we can do away with DRS! But i'm not holding my breath! :hehe:

There is. Return F1 to the days of the emphasis being on mechanical grip and restrict aero.

Has anyone thought of removing more restrictions and let the engineers work the problem of the dirty air? I am sure some amazing minds could come up with some ideas.

Let them have moveable aero devices, let them have wild wings and fins as long as the car fits in a certain box.

And i still agree on removing all engine specs and just giving them a certain amount of fuel per race. Let them decide how best to use it.
