I'm thinking of taking the plunge since I've reduced by cable bill 75 bucks a month by getting rid of a spare DVR I never watched and dumping all premium channels but HBO. Still have the list of a couple of hundred basic and extended cable channels though.

So what I'm looking to do is use a streaming capable box to leverage my Netflix account more. I was leaning towards the slingbox but it looks like it can't stream via Netflix... anyone well connected care to chime in with what you're doing?

If you're already in the apple ecosystem (iPhone, iPad, iTunes, etc), you can't go wrong with an appleTV. You can "Airplay" anything to it straight from an iOS device or Mac with Mountain Lion, Netflix client is great, and you can get a lot of great shows from the iTunes store quickly after they air on TV. And it's only $99. But if you're not an "apple" person, one of the other options may be better for you.

And as you've already discovered, slingboxes serve a different purpose than the other products you mentioned. They're more of a place-shifting device - in other words, to watch what's already on your TV, but in a different location.

I use a ROKU player, which start from $60; they also have the capability for Hulu Plus and hundreds of other streaming channels, they also output in HD and 5.1 audio. Another option is a PS3 if you want to go down that route, does all of the above plus plays games and Blurays. There are hundreds of similar small media streaming boxes out there, and there really isn't too much between them. Also most Blu-ray players have the capability to streaming Netflix, some also stream other services like Hulu and Vudu.

I stream directly to my LG smartTV - could also stream through my LG BluRay, but TV is more convenient, especially with the magic wand remote.
Cancelled Starz a couple years ago, need to keep HBO and SHO for shows and boxing.

After poking around a bit, I like the Apple TV since I'm already knee deep in Apple stuff but the connectivity is very limited. I like the idea of a Blue Ray DVD player as I hadn't considered that as an option....

I'm leaning the Boxee route though, as that will allow me to watch regular TV and it's got all the connectivity I'd need. Maybe a Blue Ray DVD for the main viewing area and a Boxee for the less used TV.

If you get a BluRay player, make sure you buy a 3D capable one, just in case. Oops, then you'd need a 3D TV as well...

16:9 I was in favor of. HD 720p, 1080p I was very excited about.

I went to see The Avengers in Imax 3D and I got a headache, I hated it. Never doing that again, and on top of it all, it was impossible to read the subtitles.

Ah, you're one of those with crooked eyes :hehe:
I love it. I often use the 2D to 3D up-conversion on my LG because it looks so fantabulous :cloud9:

I have poor mans 3D, converts 3d source to anaglyph. It has a 2D to 3D conversion thing too but all it does is make it look like the image is tilted back.
