In the last 5 years since joining McLaren Lewis has managed 25 poles while his teammates (including 2 reigning WCs) have managed 3 in total.

So some genius at the team decided that qualy is not important in this Pirelli era and have contrived to end up with 2 drivers with single pace issues

How does that work?

That's a pretty impressive statistic!! In fact I must confess to going and checking the 2007 pole positions. I didn't realise he'd out qualified Alonso 6 to 2 :yikes: And the other one is when they advised him to take the wrong wing at Spa this year, and he's great at Spa. And that's it? Wow.

Yeah pretty impressive, therefore its reasonable to assume that pole position is not central to McLarens approach to beating the other top teams over a season and winning titles

Assuming they are looking to win titles and not just races when lady luck turns up

Maybe they are going to build around starting outside the top 10 and picking different tyres and doing a Perez each time

Wonder what the McLaren 'everything is ok' supporters think?

I also think McLaren could suffer next year if the Pirelli tyres are a little more forgiving. If the tyres allow racing rather than conserving those conditions will likely not suit their drivers. The noises that seem to come out about the tyres is that they may move in that direction somewhat.

true, Pirelli appear to be converging on the tyre solution that conveys the best mix of entertainment and challenge, as well as make them look good as a company

namely tyres that can be pushed so far in different ways, and a marked difference in the 2 compounds

Its no surprise as thats what the sport needs

funny how, at the start of the season, when the tyres were more random and unknown, we didnt see any tyre expert emerge, in fact we have seen those thought to be 'smooth' suddenly become 'smooth as long as the tyres are one way'

tyre 'experts' not able to show expertise across a range of tyre profiles have suffered

dont think pirelli will be bringing 'smooth tyres' next year, just tyres that will require drivers to show driving expertise by adapting their technique to get the nest out of them

RC, McLaren are collectively standing in a puddle of their own urine right now because if what you described happens, it creates a huge problem for them. It goes opposite of what Perez is good at and it creates another layer of grip issues for Jenson. Added to all this is the fact that the 2013 car design began looong before it was even a possibility that Lewis could/would leave. According to Paddy Lowe, the philosophy of the car design favored Lewis...so now the car fundamentally goes in a direction which will cause Jenson to have to adjust his driving style to cope and now the tyres creates yet a fresh hell for them to deal with. McLaren will not be as strong as many think.

I'm just saying...

It makes me want to get hold of Whitmarsh and give him(and all the gang that go with him) a good shake. Because McLaren could have had it so good. They had a great car, a great driver, the capacity to develop throughout the year but they made poor decisions and mismanaged and pissed it all up the wall.......into that collective puddle of urine .

This race just showed what a failure McLaren are. Their leading driver is leaving, and pathetic performances from both their 2013 drivers again.

2013 can't come sooner really.

The good thing about all this that Lewis will now have zero doubts (if he had at all) about leaving this hapless team.

In front of their major stakeholders, they give the better driver the unreliable car, and see the timid driver lamely surrender a podium place to a car they beat on Saturday and that started absolutely last.
