I would be over the top if Piquet beat Alonso but Alonso's experience is a big hurdle for Piquet to overcome.

Wasn't much of a hurdle for Hamilton though. ;)

But Alonso's surely got number 1 driver written into his contract.

No it wasn't to much for Hamilton because he was in a potential championship winning car. Alonso surely has #1 status in his contract but he also had that at McLaren. #1 status is basically BS because if that #1 driver has failed to produce and the #2 driver may actually have a better chance at secureing a higher standing's in the WDC or WCC it would be foolish for a team to continuely support their #1 driver.

First driver and #1 driver are different. First driver is basically that - the first driver the team has. He (or she, in the rare case) carries the higher number, and has the team's first car. The second driver carries the second number and drives the second car. At McLaren, Alonso was the first driver.

At Renault, he will be the first driver AND the #1 driver, which means he will get preferential support in the way that Schumacher did when compared to Barichello at Ferrari.

You have me confused as Alboreto was the #1 driver at Ferrari and ran #27 with Berger the #2 driver running #28 but you say the #1 driver carrie's the higher number? :?

We dont have a 'first driver and #1 driver' anymore in F1, like it ever existed anyway, you are either #1 or #2 that's it.

Ah, I think I mis-worded that.

When I say first driver, that's basically the first of the two drivers in a team. For example, in 2007, Alonso was McLaren's first driver whilst Hamilton was their second. Now Hamilton is their first whilst Kovalainen is their second. When I say #1 driver, I mean that that is the driver who they will put most of their support and resources behind, the one who will lead their championship campaign, whilst the #2 driver will provide a supporting role. At Renault, Alonso was the #1 driver, whilst Fisichella was the #2, and so it was Alonso who received most of the team backing.

At McLaren, whilst Alonso was the first driver and Hamilton was the second, neither of them was #1 or #2 - they were both given the same resources and the same support.

Now that Alonso is back at Renault, he will be their first driver and their #1, whilst Piquet will most likely have to play the supporting role and, unofficially, not allowed to beat his team mate.

A little confusing, but I think that's the best way to describe it.

Dude there is either a #1 or a #2 driver in a team regardless of the resource's they are given! You are contradicting yourself sentence by sentence :? ?

I don't mean their on-track position within the team, I meant in terms of who plays what role. Perhaps a better example would be Ferrari, Schumacher and Barichello, in comparison to McLaren, Alonso and Hamilton. It was clear from the beginning that Schumacher was the driver who would lead Ferrari's WDC campaign, whilst Barichello's task was to finish in a position that limited the points that Schumacher's main rivals could gain, whilst also accumulating as many points as possible to go towards the WCC standings.

Alonso and Hamilton, however, were both free to fight for the title, neither had to play the supporting role. Therefore, Schumacher was given #1 status, preferential treatment etc. whilst Barichello was his #2. Alonso and Hamilton were treated equally, and so neither was given #1 status.

I understand what you're getting at, but I think you're getting a little mixed up. When I say #1 or #2, I mean the way in which they are backed by the team. When I say first or second, I mean just where they sit within the team.

I think Denthúl meant higher number in the way finishing in 10th position is higher than 11th despite 11 being higher than 10 in no race order circumstances. Basically the lower the number in racing the higher it is I think he means :D

Oh, I never said you did or that you would. :)

However, in other sports, it's the kind of behaviour that leads up to it. Only a few individuals actually go further than that, but when you consider the fact that there are so many fans of the sports, a few can turn out to be a lot of people. That said, I wouldn't expect any of the people here to go any further than taking the occasional dig at another team.

That "other sport" where it can happen is a sport called football. A lovely sport football is, very passionate and I love it but I can assure you hooliganism will never happen in F1 or other motorsport. The Lewis Hamilton/Spain incident is the closest we will ever see which compared to football hooliganism is nothing. Besides no matter how much you hate a team it is ALWAYS important to stay friends with that teams supporters. Afterall the supporters have done nothing to me and I likewise. Football hooligans can't see that, total morons. I should know as one time in Rome an AS Roma fantatic/hooligan was prepared to beat me up because I supportered Hajduk. A scary joke but it must never happen in F1 or I wont be going to any GPs that is for sure.

Here is my list in more detail on who will finish in what order in 2008.

Raikkonen (Ferrari)
Hamilton (McLaren)
Massa (Ferrari)
Kovalainen (However you say it, McLaren)
and after that its anyones territory. :)
