Hmmm.... Have you looked at the qualifying results between Lewis and Jenson? Oh, you're being sarcastic, I get it. I hope this post doesn't prove you wrong too often next year. Someone is liable to link to it or make it their signature to remind you every time you look at it.

I suppose that's sort of my point, it doesn't happen often, but when it does there's a lot of reaction to put it politely. But lacking a 100% record shouldn't be that much of a surprise or a shock, against people who it seems to matter more than other drivers that Lewis gets one over on them, which I think now has increased, Perez is taking Lewis's seat, so a marker of the parallel world where Lewis has remained at McLaren, Button is supposed to have driven Lewis out, and Rosberg will be his new team mate.

I wouldn't advise anyone to leave McLaren if they want to win, but I've got to respect Lewis's decision and really wish him well." Umm...did Kimi and Alonso not leave McLaren and go on to be Champions with other teams? I appreciate McLaren coming good this year (finally) and I appreciate the heritage and what they mean to the sport but I have to say, Whitmarsh is a little too full of himself now. He just lost what many argue as the fastest guy in F1...a lost that falls on his watch and partly his fault...so you would think he would choose the McLaren way of being very starch-like and diplomatic in his retort. Focus on the remaining races and what's on offer for your new driver lineup instead of the backhanded swipe at Lewis. What happens when Lewis wins races in 2013 with a car that may not be as quick as the McLaren and Perez or Button don't, should Lewis walk by the McLaren pit and stick up two fingers? He won't, but...

I'm still rooting for McLaren, Perez and Button are both excellent drivers. The only real issues they've had is reliability. I do feel it is foolish for Hamiliton to leave though. At least to Merc, I would have said Red Bull.

To be honest, I think the move will benefit most parties. Both McLaren and Lewis Hamilton need a break from each other, their relationship has reached a less than satisfactory state.

Same here...I've always been a team supporter(in all team sports).

I'm just glad the drama is over...Both mclaren and lewis can now focus on racing...

It's a big decision for lewis, its undoubtably a gamble , but he's gambled on Mclaren for five years and it hasnt been particularly fruitful. Worse, he hasnt seemed liked, welcome or respected compared to his team mate, and that must hurt.
Lewis wouldnt stick his two fingers up, thats not his style, or make a snide comment, thats Button and Whitmarsh's style. But I bet the secret smile in his head would stretch from ear to ear.

What I take from the last 10+ years is that McLaren aren't actually a very good team. Where's all the constructors and drivers championships to back up the claims of them being a top 3 team? Lewis won in 2008 through his own skill....and a bit of luck granted.

Why would anyone want to waste their time with a team that can't deliver anything??

And let's not forget, Jenson was a waste of space up until his 2009 championship, when he won through Brawn having a lucky technical break.

Fair point, Vaptin. He is doing rather well and is on tap to win this year unless Vettel or Lewis has something to say about it. I suppose the heart of the issue is that Martin insinuates that you won't win if you leave McLaren. Heikki and JPM are the only two to leave McLaren and not win races/do well...but JPM went to NASCAR and Heikki went to a backmarker. Everyone else went on to be successful.

RC, disenchanted is putting it lightly but OK, lets go with that. I find myself in a weird place—I've always had at least one McLaren driver on my favourites list...drivers who I admire for their raw talent and personality. These include Senna, Mika, Juan Pablo and Lewis. Now that Lewis is off to AMG, so am I. I've always been driver first. I don't wish McLaren any ill-will. I certainly don't want to see them completely fall off the cliff, especially Perez but I have to remain very supportive of Lewis. In many ways, he is the one that made McLaren relevant again. I think he is going to do the same for AMG—make them a force to deal with in F1. So clearly my forum name selection wasn't properly thought through. Buggers! I may need to reinvent myself at the end of this season. We'll see.

Alonso was dragging the Renault around for two years, but I'll admit it's not as comparable as Hamilton as I think Alonso just wanted a way out, he wasn't too fussed or expectant of success at Renault, but some may argue that was Lewis's motivation to go to Mercedes, he decided he wanted a change, but Mercedes might not produce a faster car than McLaren.

Alonso ought to have won the title in 2010, sure but Ferrari messed up massively, produced an competitive car for their standards in 2011, and the car is lagging behind in 2012 with raw pace, though it remains to be seen if the pace will come back to them once they configure their upgrades and get back to higher speed circuits.

Interestingly, I think Ferrari's and Mcalren's most recent title, came at the same time in 2008, it remains to be seen whether Alonso is better off leaving Mclaren if you ask me. Even Kimi, might have taken the 2007 and 2008 titles with Mclaren.
